Suggestion on Repair work for a 96 Lude with 300k+ miles

All,

I'm new to the site and I have some questions about my lude. I'm the original owner of my 96 Prelude Si, Automatic Transmission. I have over 301,000 miles on the car with no major issues thus far.

I've repainted the car, replaced the tint, put a new stereo system in the car, and I've replaced the timing belt 3 times to date. All the maintenance has been done on the car (primarily by Honda) since the day I bought it. I have some minor carpet wear on the drivers side floor board, but all in all she is still a nice car especially being that I drive about 90 miles RT a day to work.

When the car reached 300k I started seeing the following:

* The speed odometer is bouncing back and forth
* The check engine light came on (Will be taking it to Honda to see what this is all about
* The car hesitates when changing gears.

I've been told by family and friends that its time to "put her down" but I love my CAR (just like the 1st day that I drove it off the lot) and I don't want to get rid of it.

I know that at some point I will have to get a new transmission/engine so I'm asking my fellow luders where are the best places to start looking for transmissions/engine for the lude and if its best to put money into a car with this type of mileage of it.

Thanks for your feedback!

Thanks,
Lude96

Well to start off Welcome to pz... put some floor mats in to slove the wear on the carpet... speedoes do that after a while on older cars idk least it still works... myabe and engine swap if you still want her to run strong and hard... and post some pics ASAP...

sounds like your VSS (vehicle speed sensor) is starting to take a poop on you, which would explain the first two problems. its not a terribly expensive part either, just find one used and you should be good to go.

just to make sure it is the VSS, you gotta check the CEL. i'm pretty sure a code 7 was for the VSS. you can also have that done at advanced auto parts/autozone for free if you don't feel like going all the way to honda.

def dont get rid of it....condition is what matters over the mileage...from what you've said the car is probably in pretty good condition.
