Unusal 4WS issues, need assistance

Much like everyone that owns a 4th Gen Prelude, I have encountered a rather unusual 4WS problem.

History of the fault:
Approximately 2 years ago I purchased the car and the 4WS was working perfectly.

About 1 year later my 4WS light turned on and stayed on. After following the instructions to re-solder the relays in the 4WS CU, this fixed my 4WS issue for about 6 months.

Now the 4WS light is always on. I attempted to retrieve the fault code, which to my surprise no code is shown (light stayed on permanently but found another fault with the transmission). I removed the negative terminal to the battery for about 10mins (I wanted it all to be reset). I took the car for a quick drive around the block with the 4WS light still on. Upon returning I check for any fault codes, still nothing (even the transmission fault disappeared).

I pulled the back seat out and disconnected the 3 main wiring looms for the 4WS CU, as I expected the 4WS light didn't turn on at all... so I reconnected the looms back up.

So after all that I have a 4WS fault that the car doesn't recognise as a fault.

Any suggestions?

Re: Unusal 4WS issues, need assistance

Do you hear the relays in the 4ws control unit clicking when you start the car?

Have you made any changes to the car that might affect the 4ws system?

Re: Unusal 4WS issues, need assistance

Thanks for the suggestions...

I just checked before and I couldn't hear any clicks, one time I heard a short buzzing sound (could have come from the fuel pump).

I haven't made any direct changes to the 4WS CU or changes to the suspension. However, I have installed a single 12" sub (running at about 150w RMS) that's approximately 10cm away from the CU and I also connected 2 amps (in series using 10 gauge wire) to the grounding location that the 4WS CU uses. Also I have been advised that the two back shock absorbers (dampers) were wearing out.

Do you suspect I've destroyed the relays in the CU? or something else I've done?

No, but if they're not clicking it could be a power issue. I'd try soldering the relays again. I've had to do mine 3 times.

Alright sweet, this weekend I'll pull it all apart and touch up the solder joints. I'll post again to let you know the outcome.

Re: Unusal 4WS issues, need assistance

Also when soldering you can't just put a little solder over the area you need to get the old solder hot too so it pools up also. I tried doing it like that at first but it didnt work, but then I got the joint hot enough to pool the old solder a lil and then added a little solder, haven't had a problem since and its been about a month.

Re: Unusal 4WS issues, need assistance

Unfortunately it's still not working.

I tried my best to remove as much of the old solder as possible before heating the prong and adding new solder. I also had the negative battery terminal disconnected for approximately 2 hours while I was pulling things apart (all codes wiped again).

After putting it all back together (I also relocated the amps negative line to a different grounding source) the 4WS light still stayed on permanently. I took it around the block before checking for the codes... still no code.

Another thing I tried was checking the fuse for the 4WS unit (located under the hood), with the fuse completely removed the activities of the 4WS light still acted the same. I thought the light would not come on like when I removed the 4WS CU wiring loom. I don't know if that was any use.

I'm at a complete loss, any other suggestions?

Correct me if I am wrong but isnt the 4ws fuse is in the fusebox next to your foot.

You are correct, a 10a fuse is located under the dash but I also have a 60a fuse under the bonnet. All are in perfect order.

Re: Unusal 4WS issues, need assistance

They don't turn, even with the steering wheel fully locked in a direction.

I've been reading the service manual, what I'll do next is to check the voltage going to the 4WS CU wiring looms.

If that fails, I'll try and get my hands on another 4WS CU.

Re: Unusal 4WS issues, need assistance

usually this will happen when your rear main angle sensor is knackered - and you cant fix it and it costs an arm and a leg to replace unless you can find one at a junk yard which is very unusual

Re: Unusal 4WS issues, need assistance

I think I've located the problem. It's the yellow/black wire (pin 4 on 4WS CU wiring loom) that connects to the fuse box under the dash, there is no voltage being received by the 4WS CU.

Hopefully if this is the only problem I should have 4WS steering again, which means I'm going to have to learn how to park with 4WS again.

I’ll post again once I’ve completed the job.

Re: Unusal 4WS issues, need assistance

OMG... 4WS IS AWESOME!!!!

The problem was an open connection within the black/yellow wire from the 4WS CU going to the 15a fuse (fuse no. 9). I had to spliced another wire from the back to the front as I couldn't be bothered locating the broken section.

For future reference the solution came from the Service Manual, section 17-43 (PDF page 688).

Many thanks to everyone who provided input to assist me in solving this problem, I appreciate it.
