anyone ever replace your a/c compressor clutch? need help picking one out--

Hey guys.

My AC compressor coil is going bad, and the A/C Clutch is making all kindsa noise.

The dealer says these two need to probably get replaced and want 600 bucks just for the parts.

A new AC Compressor and Clutch from pep boys is about $350, or $270 the only thing is I dont know which of the two it is.

The only differentiation in thier computer is '4gr' or '5gr' which the guys at pepboys dont know which is which or what the difference is.

Does anyone here know and can help me pick out which one i need
?

First time I'm ever going to tackle AC work myself, only thing I plan on doing professonally is getting the freon evacuated by a shop.

Anyone know of any good write ups or anything I should be concerned with or know ahead of diving into this would be appreciated!!! Any special tools etc....

TIA

You and me are in the same boat. Well as far as doing A/c work. I'm going to be doing the JDM digi climate control and I'll need to recharge my A/C. Also since my lude is a 92, it uses r12 instead of r134a. So I'll need to do the conversion, but I don't have the slightest idea as to how to do it. My boy has a 94 SI parts car, and I was thinking of just grabbing what I need. But I don't even know where to start.

Re: anyone ever replace your a/c compressor clutch? need help picking one out--

I got Bill's compressor.

Thing is I dont have the time to figure this out and install it. and if I'm going to pay the dealer or any other shop 400 bucks in labor to put this in, I dont want to put his used one in, I'd rather get a new one.

At least thats the thought process since the sound is gone and now it doesn't get cold at all.

So my initial question still remains:

There are 2 compressors for 4th gen Preludes, The only differentiation in thier computer is '4gr' or '5gr' which the guys at pepboys dont know which is which or what the difference is.

Does anyone here know and can help me pick out which one i need?

4gr and 5gr sounds like its referring to the number of ribs on the pulleys. The H23 has more ribs on the pulleys than the H22 does. (or the other way around, I forget.)

Re: anyone ever replace your a/c compressor clutch? need help picking one out--

do they work interchangeably?

I ask beacuse I've got an h23 right now, but I want to do an H22 swap later this summer, and I'd be pissed if i spent 400 bucks total on new AC **** that wont work with the H22.

I thought everything from an H23 bolted right up to an H22

Just stick with H23 pulleys, even after the swap. I didn't want to change all the pulleys when I swapped so I used the H23 crank pulley on the H22, problem solved.
