Machine Gun Gas Pedal!

Well the title describes it all. I have experienced a problem that has been progressing for a week now.

When I press the gas around 50mph, there is a continuous rapid thud in the gas pedal as if it was the recoil of a machine gun. I check to see if my lug nuts were loose but they are ok.

This bewildered me also. My uphill driveway was covered in ice yesterday and at the top I just spun out and didn't go anywhere. But when I was spinning the tires, the thudding occurred again.

And this is ONLY when accelerate. If I accelerate to 60mph, it thuds. If I coast at 60mph, there is nothing.

Before I have it check out, just thought I would ask PZ. My ony idea is that the wheels aren't balanced correctly.

You might have a misfire. Get some new plugs and wires. My grand mariquis did the same thing, I replaced it, and havent heard it since.

Re: Machine Gun Gas Pedal!

Wish there was a lil bit of a better description of the problem. Does it make any sound at all or is it all vibrations?

Re: Machine Gun Gas Pedal!

I don't think it's a misfire because I can just rev up in the engine and it is just fine. Also, what is a CV boot? Wheel balance and axle sound plausible.

Just think, everytime you press on the gas pedal up around 50mph, the gas pedal vibrates(thuds) It doesn't really vibrate anything else but you can kind of feel it in the floor too.

Re: Machine Gun Gas Pedal!

wouldn't really hurt to try the basic things first such as wheel balancing. At least try that first and if that don't fix, try the axles

Re: Machine Gun Gas Pedal!

a cv boot is the boot that goes around your cv joint. if that is torn then your cv joint could be bad.

i have this exact same problem. i had a tie rod that was bad and an upper ball joint that was bad. i replaced both and the problem got alot better. i also balanced all my tires and this also helped. the problem is not completely gone but it is most deffinately alot better. i can barely feel it now. before you do anything make sure all your joints are good.

if all your joints are good i would say it could be a belt has broken in one of your tires. does the steering whell shake at all?

Re: Machine Gun Gas Pedal!

your tires are fine and so are your rims if it were those ou would have the problem all the time at speed it is either the cv or just worn bushings or ball joint>

Re: Machine Gun Gas Pedal!

do you have an automatic transmission?

If you do, I'd bet money that your transmission is slipping in 4th.

If it was his CV it would be doing it all the time, not just while he hits the gas. Same thing with the tie rod. Once he got to 50 he wouldn't have to touch the gas for the car to shake.

Re: Machine Gun Gas Pedal!

im sorry but I would have to disagree. I have a manual transmission and my car shakes only when im on the gas and it is my inner cv joints. they are pretty much shot. and it shakes very badly but only when I press the gas. when I coast it goes way. so id say its mosy deffinately your cv shafts. there is no reason your ar would shake if a gear is slippin.

I had a cutlass supreme with a slipping tranny and it did the same thing. When I wasn't on it it would coast fine. And I'd be okay at anything under 45-50mph. Then as soon as I went to hit the gas it'd sound like a gun since it was trying to engage and kept slipping.

I may be wrong tho. I just disagree that it could be a CV. But like I said, I could be wrong. I'm not perfect

Re: Machine Gun Gas Pedal!

I have to say sorry can't help.
The reason i checked this thread out, i thought you actully had a gun pedal, I really wanted to see how stupid that would look. Kinda like the revolver shifter, SO, dumb.
Now that i see thats not the case, best of luck wish i could be more help!
