Clunking noise from inside fender! What the hell...

When ever I leave my car sit outside overnight and its about 45 degrees or less, when I start the car for the first time in the morning there is a bunch of random clunking coming from the drivers side front wheel. But as soon as the car warms up about 10 minutes later, or I drive the car later in the day it goes away and is not heard again. When it's clunking for that 10 minutes there aren't even any real bumps on the road. The struts, springs, and upper control arms are brand new spanking new. If I keep the car in the garage it stays warm and I wont hear the clunks on the first start of the morning. I'll probably never hear it after the winter. But it drives me nuts knowing something isn't right.

Can anyway help me out?

its something to do with the drivetrain iirc. its really common in preludes. did you try searching? i know its been covered a few times.

Yea I tried searching, only found stuff that clunks all the time. Mine only seems to clunk on the first start after sitting outside over a cold night. It will only clunk for about the first 10 minutes even if I'm driving straight on a fairly smooth road.

Re: Clunking noise from inside fender! What the hell...

So lately it's been clunking and squeaking a bit more, regardless of temperature. Today I did a little test. I pushed down on every corner of the car, and all were silent except my front drivers side. When I push down on it, it makes a sound. Not really a a high pitched squeak, but more like your are jumping a 20 year old spring mattress. I don't get it.

When you get answer to this let me know. My old car did that and then the timing belt jumped and took the motor so I never figured it out.

Re: Clunking noise from inside fender! What the hell...

Could my clunking be from bad motor mounts? Last time my car was in the shop, they said my mounts were shot. I've ordered some Innovative solid mounts, and will be putting them on soon. Some days I don't hear the clunking at all, some days its pretty bad. It sounds like a rubbery/metal clunk in the fender when I go over slight bumps.

Re: Clunking noise from inside fender! What the hell...

did you happen to notice it only happens when you hit the gas from a slow roll or a stop. or hitting the brakes from a slow roll?? it really could be a lot of things. but if you're sure its from the wheel well, most likely its the drive shaft. check for play. you shouldn't have any play. not only try to rotate it, but also try to push and pull it in and out of the tranny. if you have any play there, thats it. if its your motor mounts you'll hear it when you rev the motor... not just driving. have you noticed the car shaking/vibrating more then usual. thats a clue that it could be your mounts too. you feel it especially under moderate to hard acceleration at lower RPMs (like 2-4k) too. thats the only hints i can think of at this time. but when you say its coming from the wheel well, sounds to me like its either suspension or drive shaft. when my rear endlinks went bad they'd clunk even though there were no bumps. believe me the slightest bump, even ones you don't feel, can cause suspension to clunk if something is going bad. hope that helps.

Re: Clunking noise from inside fender! What the hell...

Thanks for the reply man. It doesn't seem to be affected by acceleration or braking. And it's also probably not the mounts since it doesn't do it when I rev the engine. Sounds similar to the problem you had. Seems to clunk at the slightest bumps, even the ones you don't feel. Clunks on big bumps sometimes, and sometimes not at all. Maybe the guy that will be installing my mounts will be able to help me out. : /

Re: Clunking noise from inside fender! What the hell...

yea dude. sounds like something in your suspension. take the wheel off and start inspecting your bushings and joints. if they are heavily dry rotted, that could be your problem. check your endlinks they could have a small crack or the joint could have dried out. the way i found out my endlinks were bad was i jacked up the car and simulated a bump by grabbing my back wheels and thrusting them upward as hard as i can (sounds pretty sexual lol) if you get clunking noises, start holding random suspension parts (being careful not to pinch your fingers somewhere) and feel for the clunk. might help to have a friend help you out. if that doesn't help you can simulate it with the wheels on the ground by driving up on those wheel ramps and having someone push down on the car and listen for the noise then.
