4WS...

So, I just started playing with Preludes, and I gotta say, I love it lol. However, the one thing i can't stand is the damn 4WS systems. Just not a fan. Are all US 4th gen Preludes equipped with 4WS?

Re: 4WS...

I didn't think any part of that would be street-legal/safe at that. How exactly does it work? Is it active all the time?

Re: 4WS...

Fourth gen ludes had either electronic or hydraulic 4WS systems (can't remember which, i think electronic), and the 3rd gen ones were strictly mechanical. Pretty sure it's constantly running, although, now that I think about it, it could very well be a toggle similar to the 4WD on some trucks and SUV's. As far as i know, it doesn't turn the rear wheels symmetrically to the front ones, otherwise you'd have a near-zero turn radius. All it does is assist handling, but I'm simply just not a fan of it.

Re: 4WS...

It is electric, has been a hassle but is really cool!! It runs all the time, is computer controlled. At low speeds it turns opposite of the front wheels and at higher speeds it actually turns the same way as the front to counter understeer I think its called. I think it makes my car look more sophisticated lol.

Re: 4WS...

So my guess is it is obviously only an option.. and probly a rare one at that considering I have never heard of it before?

Re: 4WS...

Yes it was an option, but not too rare in the years that it was made. In the 4th gen im 99% sure it was 92-94, I have seen plenty of 4ws ludes just look at the trunk lid it will say 4WS, unless you look at mine lol, everything's shaved and erased.

Re: 4WS...

This is pretty cool, actually. Leave it to honda... But, that being said, does it have some issues that take away from its glory? I say that only because as far as I have seen, its not something thats being pushed in the market. If it was a solid system, etc don't you think it would've been adapted a bit more?

Re: 4WS...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autocross

Basically how much does it actually improve tight turning, etc? at highspeeds, as well as low?

What car did nissan equip this with?

The 240sx actually had 4ws on a few of them, it was mechanical.

Re: 4WS...

I've driven the 240sx with 4WS and I personally thought it was kinda sketchy. I guess I'm just used to dealing with understeer or oversteer (depending on the car) so much that the 4WS was a bit much for me.

lol ahhh 4ws.....from 92-94 had it it was all electrical, and if the computer that controls it behind the driver passenger ever goes bad be prepared to pay 3000 for a new one. lol honest opinion its nice to have to show but as far as improving your ride quality...yes at low speeds..hell no at high speeds lol. mines went bad on my 93 (R.I.P.) while i was doing 60 on the highway, if you ever wondered what it would be like to drive your car sideways lol....this is definately the way to do it lol...it scared the living **** out of me.. but anyways parts are hard to find, and hella expensive so make sure it works if you do get one with that option. you can put it on a 5th gen but its not really worth all the work unless your going to shows and what not.... :stupido2:

Re: 4WS...

Nah, I'm actually in the market for one without 4WS. I'd rather not mess with any of that at all, it'll only cost more money than i have to spend lol, and if I get second place in a show just because I DON'T have 4WS, then the judges can go to hell hahaha

Re: 4WS...

4ws is pretty rare on ludes. i have seen very few 4th gens that have it. and it is awsome! being able to turn around on a street without having to back up is pretty cool. and at high speeds it does take away alot of the under steer. and for those of you who dont know understeer is when the back end of the car tends to slide out due to turning hard.

Re: 4WS...

The 4WS 4th gens are fun to drive when they have work done to the suspension, sadly alot of the 4th gens were AUTO though the 3rd gens were mainly manual, the 5th gens were in Asian and Euro market only but are expensive to FIX really Expensive kinda like fixing the ATTS that we got here in america and 4ws was also on big suvs like the Nav and some GM (Yukon/Escalade) and Nissans version SUCKED

BLASPHEMY!

Pretty much the best handling system a car could have without driving a 4wd hicas system or MR engined car. For autocross, turns are too tight to really utilize it, but on a track, street... pure sex

Why wouldn't it be street legal? You're not the first person I've heard think that either.

It takes some getting used to but after that, pure SEx!

Most of the problems are related to solder joints in the control unit getting old and cracking. I had similar problems with mine until I did the resolder fix. Now she's rock solid.
