Auto tranny problems

Well, i know everyones probably just gonna say its time for a 5 speed swap...which well, is in the plans...i ust dont think i have the cash to do that just yet. Anyhow, onto the problem. When i bought this car a couple months back, the auto tranny that came with it worked just fine. Then suddenly out of nowhere, my D4 light starts blinking, and it wont shift into 1st or 3rd anymore. While in D4 it will only stay in 4th gear, so i had to start from 2nd and manually shift up to D3 (which didnt actually shift it to 3rd, it went straight to 4th) and i was ok with this, as long as it lasted untill i had the money to swap a manual in. But today while driving it started acting weirder than normal, i shifted up to D4 at around 30 MPH to see if it would fix anything and the car shifted itself down to 2nd gear. So i put it back in D3 and it shifted back up to 3rd. I get to my buddies house pull the e-brake and put it in park and shut ehr off, then when i get back in to leave and start it, it lurched forward hard like it was in gear..luckily i had my foot on the brake and the e-brake on. So i put it in reverse and went to back up, it instead decided to pull forward...turns out i no longer have a park, neutral or reverse, they're all 2nd gear now.

Can anyone give me some idea as to what is going on here or what i can possibly do to fix it? I tried putting in inbetween the different gears to see if i could find neutral or something, but its nowhere.

Re: Auto tranny problems

Mine was doing sorta the same thing before I just did my swap, I also lost 1st and 3rd and a knock had developed from the transmission about 6months prior.

Re: Auto tranny problems

figured out what the problem was....Or so i believe. I looked up the guide and checked my D4 blinking light and it seems my shift control solenoid is bad, as well as my countershaft speed sensor. So, im trying to find some place that has the shift control solenoid.....seems like noone has it =/ I'm hoping honda does (though i feel like im only gonna get raped by going there)

Re: Auto tranny problems

Well im finding that ever solenoid assembley out there is ohh about $200....i know theres a few accords and a prelude in the local junkyard, though the prelude has the sohc engine in it....

Anyone know if i can take a solenoid off an accord or different prelude type?

While i'm at it can anyone tell me where the countershaft speed sensor is at

AND what other vehicles would have a knock sensor that would fit my h23?

Thanks again everyone

Re: Auto tranny problems

Hopefully that turns out to be your problem. Although that 200 bucks can go a long ways towards a 5 speed swap. You can do what I did and use the accord tranny which you should be able to find for around 150 bucks. I am into it about 600 without the tranny but that is with an 8lb fidanza flywheel.

Re: Auto tranny problems

it would probably be ok to try an shift solenoid from a dohc or sohc accord tranny....as long as they line up and the plugs match which im sure they do....i mean, it wouldnt hurt to try. you cant really fvck anything up and they are real easy to change out.

Re: Auto tranny problems

well i got a junkyard special on a lock solenoid and shift solenoid....hooked em up and my D4 isnt indicating a problem for the shift solenoid....but it hasnt changed anything else. Park neutral and reverse are still 2nd or 3rd gear, depending on how its feeling. And D4 it'll shift up to 3rd for a few and then downshift to 2nd, no matter what speed im at.

ANY ideas at all? i really, really really dont have $700 to blow on a manual swap....

If the d4 is still on download the service manual in my sig. The d4 codes and probable causes are on page 14-36 and 14-37. Get the code and that will tell you what is wrong. Also, if you dont have a code, on page 14-64 and 14-65 are symptoms and probable causes for the auto tranny.

Re: Auto tranny problems

i could be completely wrong though...the only thing i found that looks even simmilar to what the manual shows is a 17 mm bolt, when i pulled it off it had a long tube attached to it....i didnt quite understand how thats supposed to measure speed, but i replaced it anyway. Still it did nothing for me....did i maybe replace the wrong thing? can ya tell me what its supposed to look like so i can figure out if i got it or not?

Re: Auto tranny problems

If you get too stuck I could sell you my H23 Auto TCM cheap. Who knows, might be the problem. Need to recover some 5 speed swap expenses

Re: Auto tranny problems

Hey thanks for the pics, helped me find it....found out what the problem was too, the white peice inside the connector fell right out and the wires pulled out when i disconnected it...so i reassembled it correctly and plugged it in...no more flashing D4.....but aside from that, nothing else has changed...what could possibly be causing this? i cant find anything in the manual that says anything about being able to drive in park neutral and reverse... and obviously the TCU doesnt seem to think anything is wrong now lol

Re: Auto tranny problems

Can we say 5 speed swap time? Seriously tho it sounds like the tranny might be all effed up. Hondamatic's have a tendency to get like that even with lower miles. Mine crapped out when the engine and tranny were at approx. 100k miles.

Re: Auto tranny problems

Ugh...i so wish i could do a 5spd swap right now...i just dont have the money at all, im making about 300 a month right now, and thats just enough to cover my bills and put gas in my car lol

So, its doing even more fun stuff now. The D4 light doesnt blink....but when im driving in D3 now, it will randomly shift down to 2nd (which let me tell ya, at almost 60 MPH, is a DAMN rude awakening) when it does this, the D4 light blinks giving me transmission codes 7, 9, and 15. Well i just replaced the solenoids, and fixed my speed sensors...obviously since D4 never blinks...but once it decides to shift down it starts blinking (it may take 10 min, might take 30 seconds, depends on how its feeling) So...im wondering if the TCM is screwed...would a messed up TCM cause my car to not go into park neutral or reverse? I always felt like those were mechanical switches when you pushed the shifter up...but maybe i'm wrong? Also can i cannibalize an accord or something for their TCM?
