f22 help????

I'm new to Honda's and sport compacts. I just bought a 93 Prelude with an F22 engine in it with 50,000 on it. I went to pick up the car and it started ran for awhile then shut it off to fill out paper work with the guy. Upon returning back outside and starting car to leave car ran for a min or two and then bogged down and died. Since this has happened it hasn't started and doesn't seem to have spark. My question are any idea what's wrong??? Ha, no me and my father were thinking that maybe it jumped timing and is not allowing it to hit and get spark to start. I was also thinking maybe a module or a relay any ideas and suggestions would help. I haven't done timing on these kinda engines so will be kinda a learning leason for me.

Re: f22 help????

ok this happened to me last weekend, and it turned out to be the fuel pump. things to do first:
-pull a plug out and check the color, black its running rich, grey it should be fine.
-place the spark plug next to the ground wire on top of the engine and try to start the car, there should be sparks shooting from the plug to the ground.
-loosen a fuel line and see if there is pressure, you will need to let this sit open as you start the car because there will be residual pressure in the lines that will cause it to spray, but you pump may still be bad.
-also check the belt cover to see if you skipped a tooth, but i dont thing this is the question.

questions i have, did it bogg down as you tried to give it gas? is there fuel in it lol?? is the engine making noisees when u turn it over, bad noises, like ticking or knocking, rattles stuff like that, that will be a clue to whether or not your belt skipped, but most likely the fuel pump is dead.

When replacing the fuel pump all you need to do is pull the rear seats out and there is a cover, it is very stuborn to get out but this is doable, honda will want around 800 to do it, i did it for 220 in parts. took about two hours

Wow incredibly this is one of the first posts that wasn't totally pointless. I think this is a well written post and you actually beat me to the punch.

How do you know its not getting spark??? My first guess would have been the fuel pump.

Re: f22 help????

ok haven't got to look at her yet but did take a gander to find out what engine was for sure in it after doing research. I found it actually has the H23A1 DOHC in it. I hopefully will be able to go look at it some time soon to see if I can find out what is wrong with it. When I turn on the ignition i should be able to hear the fuel pump kick on for a few seconds right? Also will check spark again was told by kid wasn't and acts like the larger engines I am used to that's why I stated that. Finally, it's got gas but will put more in it just to humor you all, if it fires after that I will kick my own A$$. Will let ya know how it goes and what all pump wise would I need just pump or some kind of kit.

Again thanks.

Yes. And as far as replacing it goes, OEM or Walboro are the ways to go.

Re: f22 help????

Ok I changed the fuel pump today and put in the Walbro 255lph. I tried to start still won't start. I have gas to the fuel filter so what would it be now if you could help me on this? I am checking spark in the morning to make sure it has it after that what else would need checked or from their would it be the timing I began thinking it was?

Did you check the spark first? Really should have done that first.

Re: f22 help????

Sorry took so long to update. I checked and it didn't have spark to the plugs or distributor. Would it help it I changed out the rotor, cap and coil do you think that would fix the problem? If not then would a complete upgrade on the ignition system like the msd blaster 2 external coil?

Check the spark at the coil, might be the igniter inside the distributor also.

Re: f22 help????

check your main relay.... turn your key untill you can hear your radio and you can see all of the service lights like your oil and battery light, but don't turn the car on.... while the service lights are on, look at your "chek engine" light, it should be humming and then click off.... this symbolizes that the fuel pump is sending the fuel for your car to start....

if it doesn't humm... or click, then its your main relay

Re: f22 help????

It humms and clicks so it doesnt seem like it. I'm gonna get plugs cap and rotor and switch them out then will get coil. If my wife has her way she is just gonna send it to a shop we know just down the road and make him fix it.

Re: f22 help????

Dont just go replacing things without testing. I would go ahead and do the plugs, cap, and rotor but the coil can be tested and isn't a normal wear out part.

Re: f22 help????

hmm thats weird take off distributor and see why it wont spin also does a cel come on if so you check it by getting like a paper clip and put one end in the jumper wire and the other in the other side of jumper wire not sure bout this generation but they are usually down under dash on passenger side but bout the cutting off i would guess crank position sensor thats what my gf accord did

Re: f22 help????

Finally removed the distributor to check why wasn't rotating had been told to check the prongs on the end of it. Upon doing this I noticed that the bolts holding the distributor on weren't tight at all hell there was only two on it and the lower one wasn't even finger tight. I fixed that and am going to try it again and see what happens.
