Bad oil leak

So ive searched the forums but im still gonna ask.. I have a 94 with the stock h22 and its leaking very bad, i put some oil in and climbed under it and i can tell its comming from around the oil filter, its not the filter tho i replaced that and its still pouring out.. i was reading somewhere that it could be the oil cooler o ring but how would i check that? I have almost no exp working on cars ive replaces alternators starters cv axels and caliper and rotars by myself and i can figure **** out hella quick but right now i have no idea where to start.

Re: Bad oil leak

i had this problem last week. you need to take the oil filter off. using a 30 mm socket, you need to remove the spindle and the two lines on the cooler. pull the cooler down and you will see the o ring in the middle groove of the cooler. replace the o ring with the OEM HONDA O RING and reinstall in reverse order.

At the risk of sounding like a total dumbass... I thought the 4th gen only came with H23s and F series motors? My 4th gen has an H22, but its from a 5th gen...
Just curious...

Re: Bad oil leak

so u say its an 80% chance thats whats causing the leak.

Where else could it be possible for a leak to form, allowing a pretty desent amount of oil to leak?

Re: Bad oil leak

im gonna say you are right. excuse me because ive been drinking all weekend. it is very likely thats where the leak is coming from. another possibility, and this is what fooled me, is the oil sending unit. i had a slight leak from there a few months back. i got a new sending unit and teflon taped it. just to be sure i put some high temp gray rtv around the housing.

Re: Bad oil leak

+1 on Oil Cooler O-Ring. Absnt knows his ****. And it's really not hard to replace at all. A little more difficult than changing a filter pretty much... And yes, 4G's came with H22's (only 93+ though).

I'm not sure, I would definitely replace the cooler O-ring first...

Re: Bad oil leak

i just replaced my Oil Cooler O ring about 2 weeks ago. I had the same symptoms as you. To get the lines off, I just took of the clamps and then twisted the hose back and forth while trying to pull it off. When you get the oil cooler off, just pull the old ring out (mine was in about 4 pieces and hard as plastic!), then put the new one in and put everything back together....the only hard part is getting the new o ring in because its hard to get the oil cooler to a position that you can see what you are doing. Best of luck!

Re: Bad oil leak

I was in the same situation. all I did was push the cooler up so icould get a look at the ring and I had to use a screw driver to get the old ring out. it sucked but I wasn't able to get the hoses off either. it sucked but I finally got it. also my car was on a hoist so I was able to get way up in there without having to lay under the car.

Re: Bad oil leak

I guess this a common problem among Hondas/Preludes.

Just had this happen to me this morning.
Started my car, let it run for a bit, backed up, then i noticed oil from where I pulled out...
...I look under the car and there is oil spewing everywhere.

Got my parts and fixed it right away. Replaced the oil sending unit and the o-ring.

To answer your Q:
-Put some grease on the o-ring...this will hold the o-ring in place long enough to tighten the bolt.

Good Luck
