Car sounds louder turning left! help please!

Hey everyone,
so on my way back from my friends house today I noticed the car sounded louder when I turned the steering wheel to the left. A louder exhaust like sound, like I was revving the engine a little bit.
I have a torn front left CV boot on the axle, and I'm about to get that replaced but I thought messed up axles make a clicking sound, not a groaning sound.
It almost sounds as if the wheel is gently grinding against the inside of the wheel well... But its not...

Any ideas on what it could be?
Thanks!

Re: Car sounds louder turning left! help please!

umm first of all check if the lug nuts are tight and then jack the car up and grab the top and bottom of the tire and pull and push. If the wheel moves it the wheel bearing and that is not a smart thing to be rolling around on

Maybe brakes are scraping against rotor when taking a turn (happens sometimes)

Check your brakes when the car is in the air..

okay, so far... I've heard: Steering Column problem, power steering, axle problem, brake problem, alternator?!? problem...
Short of replacing EVERY part in my car, can someone give me an educated answer?

Re: Car sounds louder turning left! help please!

you shouldnt be replacing anything without checking it out. There are just so many things it could be. You have to be able to diagnose it unless you want to buy all new parts. If its the pump you should hear it. with the hood open stand over the power steering pump, engine running, and have someone turn the wheels all the way to left and all the way to the right, you should hear it make a groan noise if its bad. The CV axles generally do make a clicking noise but they can make a groan, its a bearing basically, and it can make a wide variety of noises. If that boot has been torn for more than a week or so I'd say go ahead and replace the whole axle unless you feel comfortable rebuilding the joint. And you said it happens when turning left. So if its a wheel bearing its most likely on the right side. as you turn the weight of the car transfers to the opposite side, so dont forget to check the right wheel bearing as well. Or what about tie arm ends, or sway arm, or any suspension bushings, ball joints, control arms.. etc. all of it needs to be checked if you have no idea what the problem is.

Re: Car sounds louder turning left! help please!

I'm pretty sure its the wheel bearing... anyone have a price check on wheel bearings? It's not a drum break, its a disc brake.

Also, is it possible to install a new wheel bearing myself? or... am I gonna be digging in my wallet for this one?

>_<

it might be a tedious job but with the right tools you CAN do it yourself. and before you replace it, be 100% sure it is the problem.

Re: Car sounds louder turning left! help please!

advance auto has a front end service kit that you can rent and i think it includes the press to get the bearing out. if it doesnt im sure they have a different kit for bearings.

bottle jack few wooden blocks and a bumper of a heavy ass truck makes for a good back yard press. just be careful it don't slip off.

youd be ok for a bit, but you want to replace it ASAP, because you never know when it will completely fail, as in your wheel fall off (i think thats what happens)
