1. Who honed your block?
2. Did they do a proper hone for the FRM?
3. Why didnt you balance the rotating assembly? (its ~ $200 and worth ~$5k on a h23)
4. New rings with the rebuild kit?

2. I doubt they did. Theres only a few places in the US that have the specialty honing tools for FRM. Hopefully the cylinders are still round and aren't too large now.

3. They wouldnt have unless you told them too. Its a specialty service not commmonly sought after on a basic rebuild. The h23 is a special motor IMO because of how commonly they spin bearings. I would balance it like mad to avoid excess strain on the motor.

4. hmm.. ring end gap... hone.. hmm.

Let me make it clear I'm not saying that your motor is doomed or wont run. I was just pondering and curious. Personally, I might be concerned about the life of the motor, the oil burning issues, and compression even.

Yeah...FRM honing isn't easy to come by my friend...Unless you're 100% positive they did it...but you didn't sound too sure.

my h23a1, the one with 227K that used a quart of 20w50 every 1000 miles, would occassionally lag when trying to accelerate; not long after takeoff, but after the cluth (which was fine) was fully engaged... It's like it just temporarily lost power, but very briefly... then it acted fine and it only did this once a week or so if I remember right.

so, could that be one sign of bearings going?

Re: Okies so Far....

Southern Cylinder Head isn't known for their great honing abilities on the frm sleeves. I know that we (where I work) don't really trust them. But my boss has his reasons, so I can't give you any solid evidence why not to use them. Let me know if they did a good job, and maybe I'll persuade him to start taking them there instead of shipping it to Florida.

Re: Okies so Far....

Yeah it does.
4th Gen Si H23 Has beat'in a 5th Gen H22 Base Hands Down.
This wouldnt be bench racing because its happened, ive done it more then once.
in the long run the 3rd gen is WAY better stock. Simply because they are Better. B20>H23>H22

Not saying that yeah sometimes the H22 MIGHT out run a H23 as far as Bolt ons and stuff like that because they have more of an abundance available. H23 may-not have VTEC, but that doesn't mean that they cant out run an H22. Im not trying to step on toes, just saying my h23 when slinging oil like crazy and running lean WAXXXed a 5th gen H22 Base. Then my 4th H23 got WAXXXXXED by 3rd Gen B20.

Stock i say a H23 can out run a H22. simply because i've done it.
Stock i say a B20 can out run a H23, H22, F22. Simply because i've done it.

It just happens, its life. maybe i caught it on a bad run(s) but i doubt it. even though i am a Loyal 4th Gen driver i say the 3rd Gen is the Best equipt Stock out of 3rd-4th-5th.

3rd>4th>5th

<===== Gonna get FLAMMMMMMMED, but ill take it just because i think im right and till someone can prove me wrong other the HP numbers, Eat it =p

I'm talking bone stock vs. bone stock dude. And just because you beat an H22 once doesn't really mean a whole lot. He could have been a God aweful driver, missed a gear, wasn't even racing (lawl), who the **** knows.

I think it's a little naive to think a stock H23 would beat a stock H22 in a straight line.
