Shaking at 70

Ok, so I dont know if this is normal. I went to the canyons tonight and noticed that about 70 and up my car shakes (steering wheel) and when I press on the breaks regular, they shake a bit and makes my car shake too. my car seems to have over 170 miles on the chassis, my shocks seems to be crappy (bounces hard over bumps), I have 17" rims with some crappy tires. So what do you guys think I should do. I have an idea, but I would like to see what you guys say.

My idea is to change shocks AND springs. Change out the rims and tires. Is there anything else I can do to stop the shaking? Thanks for readin this!

Re: Shaking at 70

You should replace your rotors first to see if that's the cause of the shaking. It most likely is the problem...

Re: Shaking at 70

if it does it only at 70 then no, do not replace the rotors.

where do i start? first start with checking the balance of the wheels. if possible, roadforce them. its possible that you have a tire out of round or just an assembly. if that is the case then the roadforce machine will be able to tell you. the tires being cheap could be the cuplrit as well. get all suspension parts checked for any play. replace if needed. there is a possibility that you have a bent axle as well.

dont jump and throw parts. thats coming up with a solution to a non existent problem. find out what the cause is before jumping to a conclusion.

^holy sht, havent seen you in ages!!!

Do a 40 to 0 mph stop. If your braking is shaking and unstable, that is also another good clue that you have warped rotors. But yes, take Alex's advice above, make sure before you replace.

yea bro, been busy with a girl, work and surgery. the girl is no more. i was engaged and she cheated on me but its whatever and i had arthroscopic surgery on my shoulder.

anyways, if you are gonna feel rotor warpage it will be more than likely at or around 50 mph.

Re: Shaking at 70

Oh sorry to hear the bad news Alex, we heard you got engaged. Hope your shoulder heals fast man. Good to see you posting though.

..and it depends on the warpage. I had a friend with a 3rd gen Maxima which had horrific shakes at 40 mph to a 0 stop. Even i felt it sitting shotgun! nevertheless, i had shaking above 70mph with my Lude when i first acquired it. My rotors weren't warped but my front brake calipers were shot. I replaced my calipers and the shaking ceased to happen ever again.

Re: Shaking at 70

yea i was engaged. spent my money on the ring and the time working to pay it off. she was home on fall break and we had the best damn weekend (use your imagination). well the night i took her back to longwood she got drunk and decided to screw another guy. yea it hurt but i then realized it wasnt meant to be and i was glad it happened before i married her. but like i said its whatever. besides im enjoying the single life now, running from campus to campus is badass.

sorry for thread jacking btw.

ive never seen shake in steering at 70 from warped rotors but hey sh*t happens. if it were me, id still check every single thing that could possibly go wrong. thats just me though. everyone that knows me knows that i dont like to cut corners.

Man, Im sorry to hear about that. I WAS married. I found out the hard way. Walkin in on them, it also happened to me when I was engaged the 1st time. Yea, I had my share. And I feel for ya!!!! If you were in Cali, we could go canyon runnin allll night and meet some awesome people. I got you back bro! Remember, theres PLENTY of fish in the sea.

As far as what Im going to do, I will try step by step on finding out the problem. I want to redo my suspension anyways, I have a new axle on the passenger side, and the drivers side looked to be fine when it was up on the hydro lift. I will be change things soon, jus gotta get a lil more money...hopefully I can get my friends shop to sponsor me and I can go to the race events and shows, but who knows.

I thank you guys for your input, and Im glad that theres a hand full of you guys to post. Do you know if theres a So. Cal. Chapter around? If not, I would like to help start it. Anyways, Thanks again!!!!!!!
Oh and absntmnd69, WECOME BACK!!!!!

Re: Shaking at 70

if your tires are rotational and they are on the wrong way that could cause shakage. check that first. then check your rotors. then take your wheels to a shop and get them balanced. if that doesnt work it could be a bad alignment. worst case is your steering rack is messed up.

Re: Shaking at 70

If its shaking when you brake, its usually your front rotor or rotors being warped because that what happen with my car before. As for the shaking at 70, it probably is brake related but what is throwing me off is that if is the brakes it shouldn't take up to 70 for it to start shaking.

Hope i helped a little.

Re: Shaking at 70

...

ight as for your shaking at 70mph its an alignment issue. believe me.

and the shaking when braking (rhyme woohoo) its because your rotors are warped.

**EDIT**

Let me rephrase ...

The shaking at 70 is a suspension issue. May be alignment, but its suspension, not brake issue

Re: Shaking at 70

Shaking at high speeds like that could also be your front ball joints. Mine did that when I first bought my car. Replaced the UCA's and hasn' happened since. And yes, it could also be from warped rotors.

Re: Shaking at 70

Hello everyone,

I'm new here an am having the same issue. I just bought my 92 lude about two weeks ago. It's an Si with a H22a swap. The chasis has around 240,000 and the engine has around 41,000. It was just lowered on KYB struts and sportline springs about a week before I bought it so the suspension is brand new. The steering wheel was shaking a bit at all speeds so I got an alignment. For the most part the vibrations went away. Now the vibrations only slightly occur when on the highway and start at about 75mph. It appears that the wheels do have balancers on them, and all the lug nuts are tight. The tires seem almost brand new and are still on stock wheels. So I've ruled out bad suspension an an alignment. I would still like to take car of the steering wheel vibrating at 75mph+. I do need new brakes, but that shouldn't be an issue at 75 mph when they aren't even engaged. Should I try getting my wheels rebalanced?

Re: Shaking at 70

Your rotors could be warped and it might be extremely slight, to the point where you don't notice it til you're going 75+ mph. Also, it could VERY likely be your ball joints on the front upper control arms. That's what my problem was when I first got my car.

Re: Shaking at 70

Thanks for the info man. I guess I have to replace all rotors and pads to see if that was the problem or not. I'm probably gonna take it to tire rack to see what they think about my brakes and what the problem is.

Re: Shaking at 70

I'm pretty sure it's one of the things I listed. How long has it been since you changed your rotors? If you can't remember, it's probably been too long, so you should change them and see if that fixes your problem. If it doesn't, I would then check out your ball joints.

balance.... alignment.... suspension....then brakes. thats the way it would go.

bent rims are a possiblilty as well. but when you balance, you will find a bent rim.

i was having bad shakes too...

dealership recently 'road force balanced' my wheels on my tires and since then the vast majority of my vibrations are gone.

yes...road force machines are amazing. it will be able to measure to see the high and low spots in the tire and tell you if the tire is out of round. it will tell you if turning the tire to a certain part of the rim will bring the assembly into spec. ive diagnosed and fixed many vibrations with the force matching on the road force machine

Re: Shaking at 70

cool didn't know how it worked but it did the job.

my car is wierd now though. it vibrates only between 65-70mph. above or below its fine.

I dont know i'm kinda tired of dealing with it. this only like the 4th time they've been balanced and the car was aligned.

I finally just said i'm sure it has something to do with how sigificant my drop is with now camber kits, and the fact that Iv'e got wheel spacers and front spindles that come from a 5th gen when my car is of course a 4th gen.

Re: Shaking at 70

that sounds to me like one of your rims is bent. maybe not crazy bent but significant enough to cause it to hop and shake. did they say anything about it when you got them balanced?
