Axel Problems! yay...

So, my buddy was taking a peek under my car and noticed that the CV boot on the left side of the front axle was torn. My car is lowered a few inches, not sure how much exactly because I got it this way... I know that lowered cars put a lot more strain on the axle so thats probably why its torn.

My question... should I go about replacing the entire axle or just boot? and how much should it cost to get it done right?

ALSO! How long can I drive with a torn boot?, ive been told not to drive at all, and even been told that I'd be fine for months.
Theres no clicking sound when driving, thats what I was told to look for, no clicking or shaking, car hugs the canyons like a champ. I wouldnt have even known if my friend hadn't spotted it.

Thanks guys!

ps: yesh, i spelled axle wrong on the title.

You might wanna go ahead and replace the whole axle, i had this same prob. and just went ahead and did the whole thing.. mine clicked for about 2 months, but i wouldn't recomend this, i had mine like that cuz i was getting the money to replace both sides..

I found a guy ( legit mechanic ) said he'd do the whole thing parts and labor for 100 bucks... is that kinda... cheap?

Re: Axel Problems! yay...

Go ahead and get it replaced. I had a torn boot as well, and it's close to impossible to JUST replace the boot.

100 bucks is a good deal. It's pretty easy actually to do it yourself if you have an impact wrench and some good swivels.

My driver side axle is clicking still even after I replaced it. Actually, come to think of it both of mine click I believe. I've been driving them like that for at least 5 months. :/ And I'm not a conservative driver...Good luck though, hope you get it fixed and fixed right!

Re: Axel Problems! yay...

I always got my axles replaced at the first sign of clicking, grease, or a totally shot boot. Its better to be safe then sorry.

Think of it like this...

Say one day your drivin with shiity axles, and it snaps. 1, you wouldnt be able to control your car if your doin over 25. 2, You may have possibly screwed up a whole lot more damage to your suspension (or anything else if you get into an accident). and 3, now you gotta pay for a tow to get to the shop(which isnt cheap) then you gotta pay for the axle anyway.

Re: Axel Problems! yay...

i'm guessing by boot you mean gaitor(the black rubber bit)?
100 seems very cheap for parts and labour... a new cv joint is about $300 if my memory serves me right and don't just replace the boot, as juniorlude said it's almost impossible!
and also, you don't have to do it straight away it's pretty safe to drive it the way it is but at the same time don't put it off too long

if its not clicking when you turn you can get away with replacing the boot..they make a kit that you can put on without taking the axle apart and it comes with grease and costs maybe 12 bucks

if you decide to go ahead and get your axle replaced, 100 is a damn good price, considering a refurbished axle is about 69 bucks and a new one is 100+. just make sure he doest slip a boot over it and then charges you 100 bucks

your axle clicks when it goes bad, mostly when you make sharp turns
