need new catalytic converter & test pipe...questions

i have a hole in my exhaust on the "test pipe" (i think thats what its called)..possible "top pipe"......everything was previously welded when i bought the car so im gunna need a new cat too......just wanted some recommendations for a new ones... for stock parts - i can get the pipe and cat for around $366 which was kinda steep...

i can get a magnaflow cat for the 92 prelude s (2.2L) for around $50....and i cant find any test pipes on ebay specifically for a 92 prelude s 2.2L (they all vary)....anyone know where else i can find one or anyone selling one?

You have a Cat or a Test Pipe, not both. But uhh...I think if you've still got a stock exhaust system, any test pipe for a 92-96 should fit. Don't quote me on that though.

Re: need new catalytic converter & test pipe...questions

I'm no expert when it comes to exhaust systems, but I'm pretty sure that you have a Cat, OR you have a test pipe. You don't have both. A cat is just a pipe in the exhaust system with some **** in it to help collect certain gases that would otherwise be released into the environment. Obviously, the excess materials in the cat reduce airflow. A test pipe is just an open pipe, not designed to collect any harmful materials or anything, just designed to increase air flow over a cat. I'm pretty sure you can't have both. Maybe the people at the garage are feeding you BS to try to make money. Shops will do that ya know...

Re: need new catalytic converter & test pipe...questions

You can not have a test pipe and a cat as dbd6604 said. The Catalytic Converter is a "big bulge" right after the header. It's diameter should be twice the size of the rest of the piping if not more. Inside is a "honeycomb" of ceramic/platinum... that causes chemical reactions reducing emissions into the atmosphere. I have gutted many cats and the stuff that comes out is REDICULOUS. Just looking in I have no idea how air could pass through it. A test pipe should be around the same size as the rest of the piping maybe a tiny bit bigger. It will either have nothing inside, or be resonated with a little bit of fiberglass around the inside. I can sell you my stock Catalytic Converter for $65 if you'd like. Either that or find a test pipe. People on these sites seem to have a problem with test pipes saying that they cause the exhaust to sound "raspy."
