a little smoke coming from my h23--- what could it be?

I know this couldn't possibly be a more vague question, but i'm no mechanic. I can do small things suspension work i've learned, alternator, starter, etc... but i've never done any motor work.

I drive the car, warmed up, park and i see smoke (not a massive amount, barely noticible) coming from underneath the car. i open the hood, and i see smoke coming from the header, and then from the back of the motor towards the top of the motor too.

its a very light smoke, gotta look to really see it, not thick not really white not like a real fire.

something definitly smells like its burning.

i checked the oil and its fine or seems so anyway, i'll check it periodically every day.

any ideas what it could be?

I've been putting $$ away for an H22 and 5spd swap but it looks like i may have to accelerate that a little bit if whatever is wrong with my current motor is going to be rediculious/expensive to fix.

any thoughts?

How are your cats???

my dad had this problem with his 89 caprice for some reason, and my mom was drivin it over the bridge into philly and it set on fire

I doubt it will happen to you, but its a possibility. how cold is it right now where you live?? you may have a hole in your exhaust and its more of a steam coming from the hole.

Re: a little smoke coming from my h23--- what could it be?

I am guessing you have an oil leak which is running down onto hot parts and causing the smoke that you see.

Is there any oil leaks?

Re: a little smoke coming from my h23--- what could it be?

I think i do have an oil leak, but if anything its probably a very small one, i've been keeping my eye on the oil level, checking it once a day.

there are a few spots in my drive way but I thought that was a little brake fluid beacuse i know my abs pump is bad and needed to get replaced. (didn't wanna pay the dealer to do it, and it looks way too difficult to get to for me to do it) --- car stops fine and I just gotta add brake fluid like once every 3-4 weeks. (good enough till i get my motor swap at which time I will replace the ABS pump)

I know its stupid that i can't tell the difference between oil and brake fluid, but i hadn't really thought of it being an oil leak since I've not seen a major difference in oil level when i check it daily.

makes sense though. wish i had a lift where i could get it up high enough to see where **** is coming from.

Re: a little smoke coming from my h23--- what could it be?

Time to go clean out the engine bay with a good degreaser and pressure wash. That way it will be much easier to tell where fluids are leaking from and be my easier to tell what the problem is.

Re: a little smoke coming from my h23--- what could it be?

yea sounds like oil cold be leaking onto your exhaust and all. check your valve cover since u said it's coming from the back of your engine. i had a leak from there before. gotta kinda make sure you line the gasket up good when u put the valve cover back on or it'll leak more

Re: a little smoke coming from my h23--- what could it be?

what does it take to change the head gasket? bolt off, replace bolt on?

I've never done that before and I'm not sure if that could be the issue, or know how to check to see if it is

I'll clean it all out first and then see where the leak is coming from and go from there.

Re: a little smoke coming from my h23--- what could it be?

i've never done it before but i think you gotta take the timing belt off and then make sure the cams line back up when u put it on. but i would check other things before just replacing the head gasket

Nah I had a shop change the oil maybe about 2 months or so ago. I barely put any mileage on the car these days, but this is a relatively new development.

its right behind your oil filter...your filter bolts to it... if it leaks it will leak right on your downpipe... change it when you do an oil change...

Re: a little smoke coming from my h23--- what could it be?

haven't gotten a chance to really look into this yet. The smoke is some what touch and go. doesn't do it alot.

It only started to get to me when i noticed yesterday that my temp gauge was going al ittle past the half way mark.... then it came down and went back up again, then came down and went back up again.

today while I was doing a few things just washing it and finishing up my fog light install, I let it run for a while and I noticed a few things:

1. The Temp gauge, with the car not doing anything just sitting was bouncing up a little past the middle and back a few times. I put the heater on, and it seemed to go back down with no problems.
2. Yesterday, I cleaned the motor and the underside of the car with some simple green and a garden hose. The pics below are BEFORE i cleaned it. Today with the car running, I noticed no smoke at all. I should have jacked the car up to see if it still looks like the pics below or if it was cleaned off.
3. I notice the car is spitting water or what looks like water, out of the exhaust? Someone told me that just means its running with a good mix of air/gas. Is that true? What does water out the exhaust mean?
4. I've been checking the oil every other day, I haven't seen a change in the level at all. Not even slight.

Here are a few pics that seem to be where the smoke is coming from. Question is where is the leak--- I will check the 94ludeguy's suggestion on the next oil change.

Any further thoughts/suggestions?

Re: a little smoke coming from my h23--- what could it be?

well the car spitting water is from it getting colder. its just condensation...

and in the last pic the oil pressure sensor looks messed up like its ripped or something

but the leak looks to far to the passenger side to be the oil cooler seal... it could be the cam plug that is leaking and running down the back of the block if you look next to the dizzy behind the coil do you notice any running oil spots

you lost me here bud. i appreciate the patience but i have no idea what to look for here.

given my limited knowledge should this be something i throw in the towel on and get the dealer to look at it?

I just don't want a bill so high that it makes no sense to not just throw the new motor in.

On the other hand if this isn't something that I have to be worried about, that is just dealing with the smell every once in a while then i'll just deal with it.

then again if this is something thats starting out small but can end up leaving me stranded at the side of the road, i dont want to take a chance.

sweet thanks for that link, i'll try it this weekend when i get back from orlando for thanksgiving.

in other news on my way to work this morning, just out side my neighborhood my check engine light came on (never done that before) so I turned around and left it in the garage and drove the s2000 to work today. just didn't wanna take a chance till I figure out what all these problems are stemming from.

Re: a little smoke coming from my h23--- what could it be?

Ok Guys,

I dropped the car off at the dealer this morning because the smoke and smell have been getting worse and I just didn't get back in time this weekend to look at it myself.

My service guy is pretty cool and usually doesn't charge me anything to find out what my problems are, just the cost of repair if anything.

He called me back this morning and told me that my:

Valve cover gasket

end cap gasket (??? dunno what this is if its the cam plug or what not you were suggesting it could be)

oil pan gasket

--are bad.

They want a total of about $400 to do the work... Most of the labor going towards the oil pan gasket repair, not so much the valve cover and end cap gasket

I have no idea how to change these things but I'm willing to learn if I can do it in my garage at home with home tools and the drive to learn.

I'm worried about the oil pan gasket being under the car and I have no way to lift the car other than a couple standard jack stands.

Is it worth the hassle or should I have them just take care of it?

Should I be able to get it done cheaper elsewhere?

What other gaskets or things should I possibly have them change while they're in there so that I dont have to double up on the labor charges in a few months.

While I dont want to spend $400 right now, I'd rather get these things taken care of (either by them or me) just to buy myself some time before I'm ready to spend $4000 on a H22/ 5spd swap /labor install.

On the other hand dont want to just patch it up and then have to deal with more problems in a few months. I need the car driveable and reliable.

So what are your thoughts and opinions?

Also the temp gauge has been goin up on me randomly for the last week or so... not boiling over or over heating it usually just goes back down on its own. They are 'checking that out' for me too right now but haven't called me back on whats wrong with IT.

Any suggestions or comments?

Re: a little smoke coming from my h23--- what could it be?

does anyone know how hard it is to change an oil pressure switch?

apparently thats where my leak is coming from now.

I dont have my service manual here at the office and I gotta call the dealer back and let them know if I wanna get it done or not.

The dealer wants $130 for parts and labor.
