Automatic gearbox / transmission problem

Hi all, I have a 1993 jap import H22A 2.2 vtec prelude that I recently got and it has an automatic gearbox. At first everything seemed fine but I noticed the other day after a long journey that the gearbox was a bit "clunky" going into "d4" from "p". Anyway I left the car for a while and then it seemed ok again. Today I had to do some long journeys and after the 1st one again I noticed that it was clunky engaging into "d4". Then on my last journey I noticed that the gearbox was slightly jumping in 4th gear when engaging the power, sort of like it engages 4th and then slips a bit and then re-engages and again its a bit more clunky and not as smooth as it used to be. My first point of call tomorrow is to check the gearbox fluid level but im a bit worried it might be trashed. Anyone have any ideas or similar experience ??
Big R.

**** EDIT ******
I just checked the transmission fluid this morning and it seems ok from what i can see, the fluid seems to be a lightish brown rather than black and it doesnt seem to smell too bad. The gearbox seemed ok and smooth again this morning so for some strange reason it seems to be playing up after its warmed up ???

um the fluid is supposed to be a lightish red.. not brown or black. its probably burnt. smell it. typically tranny fluid won't have much of a smell unless its burnt.

Re: Automatic gearbox / transmission problem

hi, it smells a little bit but not really a burnt smell, i checked the fluid level and if anything it seems to be above the max a little bit rather than below it ! I got 3 litres of honda ATF from the dealers today, i just need someone to drain it and refill it as i cant get under it on my drive. My mechanic friend said its a waste of time changing it though as he said half of the fluid will be in the torque converter and the new stuff will just get mixed with the old crap stuff. Does anyone know if there is a drain plug on the torque converter itself ? rich.

Re: Automatic gearbox / transmission problem

I checked the fluid again with the car warmed up and it is strange because at the bottom of the dipstick for the tranny fluid there is the spade section with the criss cross uppper and lower section, but the fluid seems to be filled to the top of the spade rather than the criss cross section. Could it be that when the gearbox is cooler the fact that its a bit over isnt a problem but then when it gets warmer and expands could cause a problem ??? what u think ? big r
