Redline

I was wondering how far you can redline a H23?

Redline starts at 6500 RPM as you guys know but I personally have never taken it past that really, when I am redlining I usually shift right at 6500 or right before it, hardly ever do I go past that and at most 6700.

So today on my way home I got curious so I took it to 6900 or 7000 and it literally had a change in sound, like when you go from 4000 to 5000 Rpm when it sounds a lot deeper and louder because all 8 runners are open, well it was similar to that but it got even deeper.

so how far can you redline an H23 with in reasonable safety of not blowing the motor?

I just ask because my old D16A6 redlined at 7200 and that thing could take a beating, it could go 7500 7600 consistently..

They say curiosity killed the cat! am I being to curious and putting my motor at risk?

thank you all!

Re: Redline

I'm sure after maybe a few hundred RPMS over redline it starts to bounce.

Whaaaa-ong-ong-ong-ong-onnnnggggghhhhhh *clunk* *clunk* *boom* *oil*

Honda Tachometers are notorious for being off a few rpms also (usually up to 500rpms) mine is off about 200 or 300 rpms.

I hear a lot of people with H22 owners go about 200 rpms over redline this way they fall right into vtec when they upshift. If your looking for reasonable saftey of not blowing the motor, then dont go after redline at all. Its not good for the motor. If you must absolutely or your head will explode, then I recommend no more than 200 rpms over. And yes your definitely putting your motor at risk. you drive a honda so it will handle a beating ... but its just a matter of time when the last beating is "too much"

Re: Redline

Word. I have an H22 and I shift at exactly 7200 rpms, and I manage to stay in VTEC the whole time, I don't know why some feel the need to push the extra 200 rpms. Either way, like he said, redlining an engine is not good for it, period. End of story. But it's oh so fun.

If your just going to do stuff like this to your prelude, just give the keys to someone who won't kill that poor car.

Curiosity might have killed the cat, but for a while, I was a suspect.

Why do you want to rev your engine so high? It's a car, not an electric toothbrush.

Hmm. I wander why? Honda smart, people who romp on a cold engine, not so smart.

J/K dude.

Re: Redline

I think I worded my first post wrong. lol

my main question was mainly dealing with the two parts there were underlined, bold, and italicized

The:
Quote:
how far can you redline with in reasonable safety of not blowing the motor?
Quote:
"Am I putting my motor at risk?"
to be honest I was scared that I had messed something up, but the car is still running good so I'm glad

Quote:

I was curious, I admit it was dumb but its the same curiosity that cause people to do a donuts, and the same curiosity that tells people to use Nitrous when it is clearly bad for your motor in the long run!

I are sorry!

Re: Redline

You should never go past the redline. Its there to tell you that after that point your motor has a way better chance of spewing oil and shooting a rod threw the side of it. You are without a doubt putting your motor at risk.

few years ago I was really drunk with a buddy of mine, and he asked me to park his integra in the driveway, because he didnt want it sitting in the middle of the street. well his car was on a hill.
he had the e brake on and I went to put my foot on the brake so I could take the e brake off and start moving. I slammed the gas instead. It bounced of the limiter a couple of times, and it scared the piss out of me, and I was worried about it the whole rest of the party. Next morning he got in, started it up, drove away like nothin ever happened.

It might scare you, but its fine. Its a honda. I would never recommend going over redline, but I figured I would tell you this story just in case its similar to what happened to you (you said you were scared when you did it, so you obviously did it accidentally like I did)

Luckily it did not ping back and forth, I didn't take it that far, it was still holding still when I released on the gas. I heard the change in sound and released the gas quickly. I was scared, but I still am to blame for it, I was letting thoughts of wonder over take my reasoning, I did not intend for the bad, but, it happened.

I think I'm going to make it up to my car, Im gona wash and vacuum it then put in a few quarts of royal blue!

And I believe you meant royal purple.

but yea, its a honda. It can take a beating, but I wouldnt abuse it. You should make it up to your motor by building that little bastard into a full blown turbo strip car

and if you blow it up, work your ass off, save up some money, and do it all again

Re: Redline

to answer a question, if you rev a little farther than you make power then you land in a more "momentous" area for the next gear

i picked up .5 ET by revving to 8500 on the tach instead of 8000 on the tach.

Yup but you forget what motor I have and a stock h22 can take 8100 safely. You have to remember the sir spec-s has the same valve train as the type-s and it loves reving. Hell I missed-shifted once and hit the recal on my rev speed meter and it revved to 10,8xxrpms and is still living hell here is the pic

Holy ****in **** dude. That is insane. I think the most I ever hit was like 7600 cuz some dude in traffic was being a dick and I had to get in front of him lol. 10,800 is just crazy though. This ain't no B-Series dood.

Re: Redline

I mis-shifted once and the needle went past the red box on my tach but I caught it and popped it in neutral, revved a little to make sure nothing broke, an kept going.
