fuel gauge, fuel tank or is it just me?

so i have a problem with my 96 honda prelude vtec.

I go and fill up when there is only 1 or 2 bars left in my fuel level indicator on my dash, and usually when my gas light is on.

the problem is that it only fills up 12 gallons every time, with my indicator going back up to full.

i thought that the tank held about 16 gallons, cause it says 15.9 in the manual.

does anyone know the problem?

Re: fuel gauge, fuel tank or is it just me?

the one or 2 bars may be 1 or 2 gallons, plus your car holds a certain amount for when you are dead on empty. As soon as your car hits the empty mark on the gas gauge, there is still more gas in there. Its like an extra little reserve just in case you need to make it to a gas station.

I dont think its 2-4 gallons, but I know there is still gas after your car reads empty.

Re: fuel gauge, fuel tank or is it just me?

I think it's just a thing that Honda does. I know my uncle's CBR900 has a .9 gallon reserve, and that's a lot of gas for a bike, at least 60 miles. I have pushed 70 miles with my gas light on, as I pulled into the gas station it started sputtering on me, I wouldn't try to push it any farther haha. I too like to think of it as a good thing. The most I have ever managed to fit in my gas tank was that time, I got like 13.9 gallons in. Maybe it was just a type-o in the Helms.

Re: fuel gauge, fuel tank or is it just me?

So this past week I drove it til it was on fumes (or so I thought). I went to get gas last night, and I could STILL only fit 14.1 gallons into the tank. I'm not complaining though, it was only $35! Yay haha. I just think they made the reserve HUGE for some reason.

Re: fuel gauge, fuel tank or is it just me?

well guys the prelude had a 15.8/16 gallon tank in it. I've filled up with no bars in my car and still only put 14 gallons in it. Honda did that so people wont run the car dry, my friend had a civic back in High school and we would ride in that thing with the gas light on for days.

Re: fuel gauge, fuel tank or is it just me?

yea we have like a 2.1g or so reserve... i fill up with i get 2 bars.. . remember guys its bad already to drive til it hits empty... it heats up the fuel filter really really bad and may cause premature wear...

by any chance do any of you guys that have h22 hit the 400 mile mark??? i've been hitting it... but now i only reach 360... i think i need a tune up...

im usually on the highway hitting 80 mph, hitting vtec entering the freeway... since cali drivers don't like to drive slow here...

Re: fuel gauge, fuel tank or is it just me?

I've never hit 400 miles on a tank of gas. I've hit 360 before though without my fuel light coming on, so I could prolly do it if I really tried.
