When I'm in my car and when it is both off and on at times I hear a humming sound coming from the back of my car, can my fuel pump be going bad? I think it might be a fuel pump for a few reasons 1) my older 1990 Civic SI had the fuel pump in the back and 2) my friends Volkswagen Getta Wolfsberg edition had a similar problem with humming, his was humming A LOT and then his fuel pump took a crap on him and just died. Could that be my same problem?

and NO its not a cellphone.

Have someone get in it and turn the key on and put your ear up to the gas tank and listen for the humming, just do a little investigating.

when the key is completely out of the ignition it will still hum.

Mine has done it for the past 3 years. I am pretty sure it is perfectly normal.
(I think it is building up fuel pressure for when you try and start it again)

Re: whats the matter with my lude! I think it might be the fuel pump!

mine dosent but then again i know my pumps about to take a dump
heres what ya gotta do.
get a fuel pressure gauge on that rail or rent a tester kit turn the key on for a few seconds then off the gauge should read between 2-4psi with everything off if it dosent disconect the fuel filter and then youl need to do a volume test.
its all in the haynes/chilstons manual

Yes when the key is out of the ignition

and when I put my ear by the gas tank I had someone turn the key and it did it.

I'm glad to know that the humming is good I was getting nervous!

I'm just really thrown off by the fact that it still does it when the car is off and the key is all the way out.
