Icon5 Prelude falls on its face, especiall when cold

My idle is rough, poor throttle response, poor cold start-up. The timing retards itself every once in awhile and the RPM's drop down even with the service connector jumped. I am not throwing any codes. Problem still exists after its warmed up but the throttle response gets a little better.

I thought maybe it could have been a clogged CAT but I disconnected the cat and fired it up and still the same.

I have tried swapping in 3 different sets of injectors

Compression is just fine all the way across

FITV works just fine

TPS is all adjusted

Went around with a propane torch hooked up to a hose trying to find vacuum leaks and found none

Parts I have already changed out within the past month trying to correct the problem.

Distributor
Coil
Spark Plugs
Plug wires
Cap and Rotor
Fuel Pump
adjustable FPR
Injectors
TPS
Even got a spare ecu to test with

The changing timing is what is leading me to think MAP sensor, is that the right thing to try at this time?

Could a bad O2 sensor cause these problems also?

You're car will run perfectly fine with no O2 sensor at all, so I don't think a bad one would cause that problem. I'm not 100% positive though. I could see how the MAP sensor could cause a problem like this, try that next.

buy some seafoam and put sum into ur vac line going to from mani-valvecover. Then put sum in ur tank and even ur oil. That shyt does wonders

There is 53 replies last time I checked "Ask E a question" thread, and this guy really needs some help

Everything that I would have guessed has already been replaced. MAP is a possibility, though I'm not sure. Go to E's thread and ask him.

ok lets see, from the poor cold start + poor throttle response we can determine that your fuel/air mixture is not right. Now what could cause that? well let me ask you, when you start the car (obviously when the car is cold) what rpms does the car stay at? is your air filter clean? maybe your map sensor has gone bad? the tps shouldnt do that, if the tps went, you would have sporadic idle.
and since you have replaced those things, i think it could be the map or the resistor box for the fuel system.

I just ordered up a map sensor and an O2 sensor (it is due for one anyway) good idea on that resistor box, anyone know how to test it?

you dont need an o2 sensor, i am not running one, havent ran one for a while, lol
well you just need to answer my question so i can think of other things that my be wrong.

I forgot exactly what it was at, i think like 1200 or 1300rpm till the FITV closes up, the air filter hasn't been on there most of the time lately, been in the garage :( bogs down every 15 seconds or so and that is when the rpm's drop and the timing gets retarded.

Throttle response is weird too, when I hit the throttle it stumbles around and then finally does what its supposed to, but once I have hit the throttle I do it again it wont hesitate as much unless I let it sit for a second b4 i hit it again.

and this...i dont have an o2 sensor and my mileage hasnt changed and neither has engine performance

K I ordered a used resistor box off ebay just now. Also have the map sensor on they way so hopefully one of those is the culprit. I am starting to lean towards the resistor box as there is no CEL but I have had sensors fail to give correct readings to the ECU that didnt throw codes, one was a VSS

Just replaced stock pump with a Walbro 190lph, Adjustable FPR has a gauge and I have it set at 50psi

I stuck an OHM meter on my resistor box and tested between the red wire and each black and got 6 OHMS on each, don't know if there is a way to test these things out.

UPDATE: got the map sensor today, it didnt help. Found a couple vacuum leaks and took care of them, didnt help. Whats weird is when I turn up the fuel pressure to a little over 60psi I get a lot better throttle response. When I turn it down to about 50 it acts like it is starving for fuel.

Once in awhile I do get a "wiff" of raw fuel that comes up from the gas tank area but there are no drips or evidence of a leak and my pressure stays consistent.

OK did more testing, I unplugged each injector one at a time, the one in cylinder #3 seems to make little to no difference when I unplug it while all the others make a dramatic difference when unplugged.

Turned out I did have a bad injector, got the new ones in today, the car runs great but only when i have the fuel pressure turned up to atleast 60lbs, at least thats what it says on the adjustable FPR's built in gauge, The A/F meter runs most of the way on the rich side at WOT but I hear these motors are supposed to run rich.

I also noticed with my virgin p13 VTEC kicks in at around 5200 or so but with the chipped P28 I dont get VTEC until about 6k

you said you tried out 3 different sets of injectors and none of them fixed the problem so im doubting it is your injectors.

Have you change the fuel filter? Is the fuel line pinched? Are you checking fuel pressure with the vacuum hose removed from the FPR? 60psi is waayyy to high for stock injectors on a stock engine.

You are running a chipped p28? Has it been tuned or is there a guessmap on it? How do you know timing is being retarded? the engine coolant temperature sensor has a large effect on fueling and ignition at a large window of temperatures from cold to operating temperatures. As does the intake air temperature sensor.

Yes the fuel filter was just replaced, the line is not pinched that i can see, I have the P13 in now, its not retarding anymore probably had something to do with the bad injector. The only wierd thing is that I smell faint gas odors coming from on top of the gas tank, not all the time just once in a while, i have looked everywhere trying to find leaks but have found none so i think it may just be one of the rubber gasket for the gauge sending unit or pump bracket letting fumes escape the tank.

i dont understand what you mean by retarding. How are you determining that the ignition is being retarded?

also a p28 does not have EVAP control which basically purges the gas tank and redirects it to the engine after processing to be burnt up in the combustion chamber.

I would start inspecting the ECT and IAT sensors as those have a great deal of effect on engine fueling and ignition during cold and operating temperatures.

have you ever cleaned the EGR ports?

Because when I was trying to time it before the engine would kinda bog down every 15 seconds or so and the timing would retard itself.

Which ECT sensor goes to the ECU the one on the back/bottom of the engine or the one near the thermostat?

I haven't cleaned my EGR ports.
