who has installed 4th gen oem fog lights and can help me out?

I saw mike's thread on how to find the harness behind the speaker grill, but how does the rest of the wire up work?

I've installed fog lights on a car before with a Fog light wiring kit from Autozone and I was considering using that for this setup but if the prelude is already pre-wired for it, then I dont want to do that.

All I have in my grubbly little hands are the fog lights: They dont even have the connectors plugged into the bulbs so i'm going to have to ghetto rig that some how with a crimp connectors.

Is there an existing DIY or can someone help me understand what the prelude is already pre wired for?

I know i'll need a relay and switch, so I'll probably still buy the autozone kit to use the relay and switch that it comes with.

Does anyone know what specs I need to make sure that relay can handle so that I dont fry anything?

I'll probably go buy the autozone kit this afternooon and take a few pics and post it up here for you guys to see what it comes with and can help me figure out what I can use and cannot use.

Anyone wanna offer up some help to get me started and to start looking at what I need to get i'd appreciate it!

I mostly need the help with wiring it up, I'll be removing the bumper to install new turn signals (or referb them i'm not sure yet) and install new headlights this weekend anyway) so i dont need too much help with installing the actual light fixures themseves.

Thanks!

Re: who has installed 4th gen oem fog lights and can help me out?

well i managed to squeeze my fog lights in without taking off the bumper. if you dont have the oem relay then im not sure what wires go where. but you can just wire it with the relay from the parts store like you said. get any light relay and it will be fine.

instead of using a cig lighter i hooked it to the positive of my parking lights.

sweet, so the basic setup with what i get from the parts store will work then?

i just saw mizlude's diy on how to find some kinda wiring behind the dash that has something to do with the fog lights and i wasn't sure how i could utilize it.

Re: who has installed 4th gen oem fog lights and can help me out?

(Bear with me, it's hard to explain without looking at the loom)

In the front, the loom for the lights goes from the plug in the front bumper (it's a bullet type plug connector, probably electrical taped to the bottom of the radiator support panel, usually on the driver's side) into both of the fog lights then to an earth on the radiator support panel. The lights are wired in parallel.

The switch loom is a little harder. Again, hidden in the back is a bullet type plug connecter which is the link between the front and switch looms. From there you go into a relay, then to the switch in the dash.

But also going into the relay (aside from the obvious ground) is a wire that plugs into a socket in the fuse block. The socket is what provides power to the relay, so that the lights will only turn on when your headlights (or parkers/city lights for that matter) are switched on.

Did that make sense?

Re: who has installed 4th gen oem fog lights and can help me out?

you always like to complicate things for some odd reason. idk why

all you gotta do is plug the fog lights in, plug the relay in, and plug the stock switch in. thats it.
and when i say thats it, i mean.. THATS IT!!!
no need to run any extra wiring anywhere.

but, since the connector of your fogs is cut off, then you can cut the mating connector off and straight wire the fogs to the harness.

then plug any relay in under the steering column.

and plug the switch in. if you can't find the stock switch anywhere, you can use any regular 3-prong rocker switch, cut the connector off, and wire it up like that. and for the ultra-clean look, you can just keep the switch behind the panels so you won't see it, and your fogs will always be on (w/ the headlights, of course)

do you have a 92-93, or 94-96?? cuz they have the switch in diff locations.

actually it does.

I mean i gotta get in there to really see it, but for the most part i get it.

so the only fuse on the whole thing, is between the fuse box itself (thats where it draws power) to the relay.

right?

theres no fuse anywhere near the actual lights, or connected to the switch.

right?

and therefore i dont have to worry about running anything through the firewall. i just gotta find that harness by the radiator support to connect the lights to
and then the harness in the car behind the tweeter covers, and connect my relay and switch to the wires in that harness behind the tweeter cover.

is it safe to use crimp connectors to do this? or do i need to solder? I know solder is always better, but just incase I cannot, are crimp connectors safe?

Crimp connectors will do the job.

I'm gathering that he can't find the wiring looms. Wiring looms didn't come with my foglights, I had to source them elsewhere too.

Yeh but there's a line that goes from the pre installed wire to the lights, and a line from the pre installed wire to the switch that need to be obtained when you install the fogs. Honda do most of the work for you, but not all.

Yeh that's what I mean. But for whatever reason, not everybody sells those wires/plugs when they sell the foglights.

Re: who has installed 4th gen oem fog lights and can help me out?

I'm not trying to complicate ****.

I just haven't ever done this install before, and I dont like half assing things. You guys know **** so I ask and I educate myself before I dive into a project on my car.

Not to mention that I do search before I start a new thread. That means this hasn't been discussed before. Chances are the answers found in this thread wont just help me but people who in the future who may run a search with my or similiar to my questions.

I dont need an electrical fire or short in my car somewhere on allegator alley at 2am when I'm coming home from Tampa beacuse I was too lazy to get details on things that i'm not sure of.

Brash22, thanks for the patience and explanation. You're right, I dont have the stock relay, or switch. all I have are the two lights. I dont care for an ultra clean install, just easy, and safe.

not ultra clean = dont care to have that switch and oem relay if i dont need to.
easy = dont wanna run wires through the firewall if i dont have to
safe = non oem parts and doing the job right so that i dont have to worry about shorts or sparkin a fire.

yea i've definitly slept more but from what i remember of how classes were, i'd much rather put up with sitting there watching some guy lecuture than the constant annoyances of my job for 12+ hrs straight. then going home to do more work that i couldn't keep up with because of the day being such a pain in the ass.

oh well such are the negatives for owning your own business. the burden is all on you.

nick you are right. all 4th gens came prewired for fogs. just like you said it is plug an play. as you were saying starbai the fogs dont have harnesses. answer a question for me... are they oem fogs or aftermarket? the answer to that will open a lot of doors and ease a sh*t ton of confusion.

Re: who has installed 4th gen oem fog lights and can help me out?

ok fellahs... weeks later i finally got everything done and i'll explain whats up.

FIRST- MY NEXT QUESTION:

Since everything is pre-wired its probably not going to be simple, but has any one ever wired these up to work with parking lights and low beams instead of low beam only??

Now here is where we're at. These were OEM fog lights, that I got with no switch or relay.

I took the bumper off to install my new head lights/xenons/ and get a better look of how to put the fog lights in. Thakns to the help above I got that done.

As far as a relay is concerned, like people said above, all I needed to do was buy a relay from autozone for a few bucks. Popped that in.

Now, car is a 92 so the harness for this thing was right behind the speaker grill.

I was going to start to locate a tweeter switch but two things stopped me. First, I have EL guages and a harness for it thats sitting and ready to go. I dont belive that that harness has the same connection for the fog lights beacuse that harness was from a 94-96 prelude. I didn't want to get that kinda switch and then be out the money when i finally figure out how to do that harness/gauge swap.

either way I wasn't going to spend $100+ on a damn switch. So I took my happy ass to autozone and got me a 3 dollar switch.

Now I had asked in another thread, how do we know which wires to wire what up with the switch. there are 6 in the OEM harness.

By trial and error I found: black = negative, Red/Yellow = Load, Red = Power.

Seemed to work so I just wired it up to that switch and voila I'm good to go.

ok well i finally quite being lazy and did a little write up on how to wire your fogs to come on when your parking/corner lights come....i did this a while ago so i dont have any pics

whats needed:
12-14 gauge wire
wire cutters/strippers
assorted connectors and wire taps
electrical tape

For the most part this is a pretty easy project if you can follow the diagram and strip and connect wires.

besides following the diagram there are only a couple little things to be aware of.

1.)make sure that you just tap into the positive wire of the corner light. do not just directly connect it to the relay,or your fogs wont turn on and neither will your corner lights. the relay uses the power from the light to turn on the fogs.

2.) i would recommend that you put at least a 20amp fuse in between the battery and relay for extra protection. if the 20amp blows then a 30amp fuse might be needed. most relays provides protection up to 40amps.

3.)if you have an OEM fog switch you can wire that in between the corner light and relay. but when wiring the OEM switch it has to be wired a certain way or the light on the switch will always be on. (look at second diagram)

4.)when wiring the OEM switch there are 3 wires coming off of it

black=ground
red=goes to positive of corner light
orange=goes to relay

i will double check on the red and orange wire b.c i did this a while ago and im going off of memory

without switch

with switch

this is my 1st write up so if it sucks too bad

if you have any question/comments or otherwise just ask

Re: who has installed 4th gen oem fog lights and can help me out?

well i only really tapped into the parking lights, i used the eye hooks for grounds to the body and 4 of the flat connectors to connect to the relay

i just said assorted to be general... its pretty much whatever works best... using at LEAST 12-14 gauge wire to run from the battery to relay and relay to fogs is a must b.c the fogs pull alot of amps. and amps melt wires. not volts
