About to purchase- motor issues- ??

Whats up guys? i looked at a 1993 prelude today. It has a 2.2 16v motor and is stick shift.160k miles. Guy said it has "bottom end noise". So i start it up, starts and runs fine, but when RPM'S get to about 2500 or 3k you can hear the noise from the bottom of the engine. He told me"its been like that for 3 years, as long as its not beat on it will last a while". Remember, hes a salesman trying to dump the car off.. Is this common? What could it be? Does it need a motor? Any input is appreciated.. thanks guys! -Paul first post!

My car does something similar to that. But I think its coming from the transmission. It is also a 5 speed. Not sure though.

Well, how much are you paying for it? what kind of condition is it in?

an f22 (the 16valve SOHC motor you have) you can pick up at a junkyard for like $150 in running condition.

Its a 93 Prelude. 5-speed. 160k. Full body kit, carbon fiber hood(faded), header back exhuast w/2 mufflers(WHY??, doesnt look that bad actually.. sounds good), air intake, and the paint/ body is straight. Its a blueish purple color? Theyre asking $1,900.00 for it, but he said he'll take 400cash + what im driving now(94 Buick lesabre, mint w/low miles..just my winter beater)... Sounds like a steal to me, but that engine noise is the only thing holding me back.... what do you think guys????

Re: About to purchase- motor issues- ??

If I was you, I would tell him that you would like to go to a mechanic of your choice with the car. Have YOUR mechanic diagnose the sound and tell you how much it would be to replace, and how long till it must be replaced.

I hate anything newer than 87 made by gm so I'm not a big fan of the lesabre. after that most of the vehicles are made pretty crappy up until 2003 or so.

Re: About to purchase- motor issues- ??

Actually the lesabre, with the 3.8 like mine, are pretty indestructible.. But ive wanted a Prelude for a long time, and I would absolutely trade+cash, but i NEED the car to ATLEAST last until May when my Lightning goes on the road.. otherwise i'm pretty well F*CKED.. If i knew it could last those 7 months, I could then put a new motor in come spring/summer. Its just that im working part time and in college full time and couldnt afford to do the motor swap if it ended up letting go before then..

like I said, take it to your mechanic and go from there.

Then get back to us and let us know the situation
