Getting HID kit, any advice?

Hey guys,

My 4th gen prelude headlights are about as powerful as a candle stick with a mirror behind it... NOT good when I'm flying through the canyons...
I'm thinking of getting 8000k HID lights, but I'm really not sure where to buy from...
I THINK 8000k is the right choice, some people say 6000k is better since its brighter, but I like the blue tint.
also, how much should I expect to pay for a decent set? how hard is installation?
Are they legal? or do cops give you **** for having bright lights...?

any help would be great! thanks!

Re: Getting HID kit, any advice?

u can get em cheap as hell on ebay nowadays...as long as 52 shipped i believe...but i dono about the quality of those..i jus ordered a set for my lude... on my other car i have a prolumen set which is really good and with lifetime warranty but it was around $280..i got a diff set off some website for $130 shipped with lifetime warranty and its pretty good too..no problems...ill see how the ebay set works out for me :-/..

i suggest 6000k too tho...8000k is too blue and looks kinda ricey but its ur choice...cops shouldnt give u a problem for 6000k, 8000k is legal too i believe...i think 10000k+ may be where u start gettin problems from 5-0

Re: Getting HID kit, any advice?

You better find some that are DOT stamped or else they are illegal in Cali. I seriously doubt that the $52 HIDs on eBay are DOT approved, let alone decent quality. Look to spend $100-$150 for a good kit.
Installation is simple. I had mine on in 20 minutes. 6000K vs 8000K is preference. I like my 6000K's but the 8000K's don't look bad either.

Re: Getting HID kit, any advice?

If you don't have projectors don't even bother getting HID's. You're going to have bad lighting for the amount you piss everyone else on the road off. HID's are supposed to be projected onto the road, and if you don't project them it's pretty much just blasting light everywhere and you won't have much better lighting if any at all.

And the one-piece ebay projectors aren't made for HID's so they will do jack.

Talk to this guy, he sold me some good ones, 8k for 100 shipped. It's alright, but the only way you'll get better light quality from stock halogens is to get projectors with hid's(retrofitted from tsx, s2000, bmw e46). That'll be my next investment as prelude1897 comes back from vacation. To spit the truth, all i got was SLIGHTLY better lighting, not anything serious. I had to point them down because I was blinding everybody, and now and show no better visual than my stock halogens. Retrofits ftw!!!

Re: Getting HID kit, any advice?

HID's in a halogen housing IS illegal. no matter if they are DOT approved. so do those people in on comming traffic on those canyon roads a favor and don't blind them. you're liable to cause an accident that way. and if they find out you had HID's you will be at fault. but most cops honestly don't know the difference between hids and halogens. so chances are you would get away with it up until you caused an accident.

I just checked the site. Looks pretty good. I need to buy 2 sets, one for my headlights and one for my fogs.

Re: Getting HID kit, any advice?

Thanks for the replies guys, lol, I might just end up getting sylvania silverstars because I'm kinda broke right now... maybe...

And to those people talking about HID's w/o projectors, I have projectors... and thats why my halogens are dull as hell too.
If anyones seen a prius oncoming traffic at night, you'll know what its like to get blinded by non projector HIDs

Re: Getting HID kit, any advice?

there are cars from the factory that come with HID's but not projectors. they are the same bulb as in projectors but they are slightly modified so that they don't blind you nearly as bad as if they were in a regular halogen housing. their housings are designed for them. they key is, DON"T LOOK DIRECTLY AT THEM. hey that works for me at least.

HIDs are illegal in any vehicle that didnt come stock with them. I have 8000k's in my truck and 6000k's in my bike. The light output on the street between the 2 arent that different, just the 8's are a little more purple when youre looking at them. I have Luminics Ultra White's in my Lude and theyre the closest look to HID I have ever seen in just a bulb. speeddemonperformance.com has free shipping on all Luminics stuff too. It was a night and day difference in my bike and truck going to HID but yea they do blind oncomers especially the 6000's. My 6000's are white as fk. Just gotta keep them aimed down a little.

Also both of my kits are cheap ebay kits. My 6k's are xentec and they suck IMO. Flicker like crazy and sometimes I have to turn my lights on and off a few times to get them both to work. Never had a problem with my truck tho.
