Okay...here goes...

I've got a red '92 Prelude SI with two wheel steering, manual trans, and the stock DOHC engine with about 120k miles. The body is a bit rough...bit of rust around the wheel wells, dented passenger door, dented hood, missing plastic vents in front, rusty moon roof (but I have a replacement on the way), and most of the paint is severely faded. Mechanically its pretty good for the mileage...could use brakes and rotors, the CV joints are going, uses about a quart of oil per 1000 miles or so, but the clutch is good and it runs great. The interior could also use a bit of love.
I got it for a trade about 8 or 9 months ago, and it's a solid daily driver. At the time, I was looking for an Accord (and I still am, kind of) but I found this instead.

So, time for opinions. The plan is to pay of the wife's car, then save up for a used Accord and sell this one. Problem is that I like this car, and if I put in the time and $$ to fix it up it would be a really nice ride. I have a bit of a problem putting the money into it though because I need more of a family car anyway (with a 2 year old running around) and I'm guessing that I probably wouldn't see any return on anything I spent to fix up this car. (I'd like to be able to keep it and fix it up for fun, but I just don't have the space for 3 cars, and I already have a motorcycle as a toy :)

So what do you guys think: How much is it worth as is, and what would it be worth if I were to make it pretty and fix all of the problems? I know it'd be worth it if I decided to keep it, but, unfortunately, I think I'm going to have to give it up in a year or two...

Well just bouncing ideas off walls...If anyone is wondering, Blue Book lists it for about $2500 which seems a little low to me...

Thanks,
Greg

Re: Lookin' for opinions!

A MINT condition, and I do mean MINT, VTEC Prelude bluebooks at $6000. Considering you don't have the H22, and the amount of tlc needed, was well as the 120k+ miles, 2500 would seem fair. Personally I love these cars and have gotten into fights with my dad about why I'm keeping it even though it seems to be bad luck. You just have to decide what's best for your family. You could just put it on hold and once your kid grows up, drag em' back into Hondas with you lol. ;)

*Throws the bullsh*t flag* First off, they did not make a VTEC prelude in '92, get your history right. Second off, a '93 VTEC prelude, which is the closest to a '92, bluebooks at $4,035 with all options. If you go to a '96, which is the absolute farthest you can get from a '92, than you get close to 6K with a blue book of $5,805.

Now back to the OT. If your '92 Si 2WS is faded, rusted, dented and eating up a full QT of oil, I doubt you'll get $2,500 for it. You can try though. Your best bet would be trying to sell it to someone who needs a donor car or body/mechanical parts. I wish you the best of luck though.

My '94 S had an oil leak, 263xxx miles, faded/chiped/scratched paint, both fenders dented and a dent over the wheel well, completely shot power steering and a couple other little things. I got it for a grand. Put over 2K of work into it in the first week...and that was no body or paint work.

Re: Lookin' for opinions!

Don't tell me to get my **** right. I know the ****ing 92 didn't have an H22, I'm not an idiot. I was implying that an older car + NOT mint condition + no H22 would not be worth as much as a mint BB1. That's the point I was trying to make. My apologies for adding my opinion.

Re: Lookin' for opinions!

Cool...quickest way to start a fight in a forum: ASK FOR PEOPLE'S OPINIONS! LOL...

Just kidding...thanks for the input guys, as I suspected, I'd never see a return on the money I put into it...but it would still be a cool ride...

I'll be away for the weekend, but I'm still interested to see what the hardcore Honda guys have to say...after all this is my first (okay close second...my first is a motorcycle) Honda so I'm kinda new to the community.

Thanks!

Re: Lookin' for opinions!

I hate saying this about a prelude but ... You could try putting it on craigslist and parting it out. then once all that could be sold is gone, you call one of those guys that guarantee $200-$300 for a car running or not doesnt matter condition. get the extra 200 and let them scrap that bad boy.

Re: Lookin' for opinions!

I bought my car for 1000 with 190k miles on the chassis and around 90-100k on the motor. small oil leak, a/c doesnt work, and needed 1 new axle and pads. It also came with an intake, cat back exhaust, rims, a head unit, and 2 subs. Body had little rust.

I'm not sure what your lude is really worth, but I'm sure I wouldnt pay 2.5k for it. I dont know many people that would, unless they are lookin for a car to swap an h22 into. I hate to shoot you down there, but I'm trying to be honest with you. I would say its worth 1000-1200 IMHO.

Re: Lookin' for opinions!

I paid for 1000 cash for my 93 si with h23. Had quite a bit of rust on quarters and a few dings with a shot block.Came with some nice ass racing seats,75% dynomatted,Obx catback exhaust,17" bronze adr fuel rims which are discontinued, oem si wheels, cold air,skunk2 strut bar,new skunk2 springs, kyb gas shocks,no headunit but 6 infinity speakers which are pretty nice, mint condition interior, two phantom autometer gauges that are about 140 total, with a 200+ dollar tach, pretty crazy viper alarm, fully wired for speakers and subs[guy worked at best buy audio section],few things in the interior were redone with grey felt to match the mint condition seats.

All in all i paid 1000 for that and could easily part it out and scrap the rest for prob about 2500-3000 I would say and thats leaving alot out when i wrote it on paper.

pictures would help alot but the way your making it sound anything over 1200 would be crazy
