Parts interchangeable???

I am looking to buy this 1994 prelude, is the h23a1 with a bad head. Could i take a h22a1 head that has vtech and just bolt it up to the h23a1? What stock power would that be? 190? Any other info would be great just put you 2 cents in thanks

Re: Parts interchangeable???

whats wrong with the head? the whole motor doesn't have to be taken out for headwork, so its a little easier to do top end work rather than bottom end.

Yes you can bolt it up, I'm not sure if its an exact fit though. I'm pretty sure its not. And no you wont have the power of an h22, but I'm sure it will be higher than a stock h23. You will need to find someone with an h23/h22 vtec. Check in the members ride section, I know there is someone in there with a 5g prelude that has a h23vtec. Send them a pm. I'm sure they wouldn't mind helping a fellow luder.

Re: Parts interchangeable???

there's minor mod's that need to be done. blake (98vtec) is the one with the H23vtec, but i'm pretty sure he switched some of the bottom end parts as well, it wasn't simply an H23 -> H22 head swap.

Re: Parts interchangeable???

This set up is called the frankstine right?

I always wonder if it gave more horse power but The comprssion i got using your set up is

Frankienstine-9.410575860764462
h22-10.011216855926855

Id say the h22 produces a higher compression and most likely more hp, Plus its a hell of a lot less head aces

Re: Parts interchangeable???

Re: Parts interchangeable???

this is from 'hotwheelz' on honda-tech.com:

"write up... not sure but i do know all the parts required.

h22a head 93+(USDM) or 92+ (JDM) with all internals and valve cover
h22a thermostat housing
h22a waterpipe
h22a waterpump
h22a headgasket
h22a lower crank gear
h22a timing belt
h22a headbolts
h22a plug wires
h22a intake manifold (injectors perfered)
h22a header and downpipe
h22a cam gears
h22a top timing belt covers
h22a power steering braket (h23 doesn't line up right)

everything else is easy.. swap out all the parts and sensors from the h23 to the h22a intake manifold.

you can use the h23 powersteering holder but you ned to grind some off the mounting point to clear the head if not it won't bolt up, about 1 inch or so....

eh.. keep the same distributor mounts the same and is fine, but the wires are deeper in the h22a. use the manual tensioner.

replace all the parts listed above, rmove the oilcontrol plug in the block, before putting the head on.

install all the parts, you will need to run other wires and the ecu, but machanically this is it, you cannot use the same waterpump, lower crank gear because the teeth are off and the belt would fail....

anybody attemptin this from a h23 is waisting his time and money.. simpler to go if you allready have an h22a... otherwise will be more expensive the other way..."

Re: Parts interchangeable???

You're better off just getting another H23 head or a full H22 swap.

Re: Parts interchangeable???

h23 head is like 150 total shipped for a good one and to put an h22 onto a h23 block properly while making it last for more then a minute will take around 600+

Re: Parts interchangeable???

damm you guys know your stuff. So it sounds like I should just get the stock h23 head and call it a day. The situation is that my mechanic has a 1996 prelude with a 100k on the dash with bad head. He wants 400 for the car, i figured i could just throw another head on it and have a car that gets good gas millage. These cars do get good gas mileage right? I am currently driving an 2001 acura cl type s and it does not get 30 miles hwy like i need. Where could i get this h23 head, i check ebay and nothing. What is the technical term for a head? Intake manifold? thanks again

Re: Parts interchangeable???

Everyone says that it is cheaper just to slap in the H22, but like seriously I have looked and looked!!!!

The cheapest one I found is $725, and getting it shipped to my door, even at the slowest it can go is still $250 dollars more, as a result I'm looking at $975 total.

I've found H22a1 heads for like $250, and they are local, so no shipping, that is the other $725 to build it right so it doesn't mess up in 10,000 miles.

as Massacre said it is around $600, the $600 minimum is still $125 dollars cheaper then the cheapest motor I've found

Ya I can see just swapping one is a lot cheaper if you find a good deal on the motor for like $600 or $700 total, at your door and ready to be put in.

I would say if you can get a cheap motor do the entire swap!
if you want to do the work yourself and have an experience then go for the H23vtec build!
