Icon2 I am hearing ignition noise through my speakers

Ever since I bought the car 5 years ago I have been able to hear some noise coming through the speakers in my car. I can tell that it is feedback from the ignition system. I have replaced the stereo 4 times over the years, Changed from a stock coil to an MSD unit, changed plugs and wires, and added extra ground straps. Only other thing I could think of would be the distributor itself... Just wondering if that could even be the problem before I spend a bunch of money on one.

Thanks

No its not my cell phone, it is the ignition system because it fluctuates depending on the RPM

I do know what you mean with the cell phones tho lol, at&t/cingular is horrible at it, my sprint doesn't do it.

Re: I am hearing ignition noise through my speakers

do you have subs and a amplifier? Cause your experiencing what they call radio frequency interference usually its because of were you run your wires like if you rca cables are near your power cable and etc.

Re: I am hearing ignition noise through my speakers

Well I do have subs and amps, but I did it right and ran my power wires on the passenger side and the Rca's on the driver side keeping the Rca's away from the power.

Re: I am hearing ignition noise through my speakers

Ohh yea and when I installed a 6al and blaster SS coil I was able to hear it a lot more, probably because of the extra sparks that were happening.

try disconnecting you amplifier power wire from your battery and driving it like that and see if it still does it...

yea you just have a good ol case of pesky engine noise. that high pitched whining sound right? it is most likely from your amp(s). even though you may have your signal wires isolated from the power wires, engine noise can randomly show up.

unfortunately it is very difficult to troubleshoot exactly which part of your setup is picking up this interference so you will just have to try a series of fixes until it goes away. Like 91Si4ws says, in order to isolate first; try disconnecting your sound system and taking a test drive. I would just pull the amps' main fuses first. then maybe the radio fuse.

This is along the lines of what i normally do to troubleshoot engine noise:

1. Check the grounds on both the head unit and the amp(s). Make absolutely sure the ground is contacting the chasis FIRMLY and CLEANLY. This means make sure the paint is scraped away completely at the ground site and make sure the terminals are snugged down well. This is usually the quickest, easiest fix.

2. Check the RCA cables for breaks, cracks, slices, screw holes, or if they just suck in general. Replacing them can be a simple and very effective fix for engine noise too. This is an excellent time to make sure all the connections behind the head unit are cleanly taped off to prevent interference. Obviously, check all the connections at the amps too. It could be something as stupid as one of your RCA cables is loose at the amps or the tip has unscrewed itself some.

3. Check the amps' power cable to ensure the battery terminal is snugged down well, the fuse and power distributors are well seated, and of course the connection at the amp is solid.

4. At this point, you may need to start looking at the possibility some of your equipment is bad. This could be audio equipment or auto equipment. For example: Old friend of mine's alternator crapped out and it caused this ridiculously deep sound to play through his system until we swapped it out.

What do you have plugged into your cigarette lighter plug. I have a GPS plugged in and I also get a noise only when the turn by turn directions come on "Turn next left" then for a second I hear ignition noise but you hear it cut off once the GPS goes back to kind of a stand by. Maybe you have a IPOD thing.

I first off read your thread and said its a ground problem. Do you have a system? amps etc. cause it might be in your wiring, are you running your RCA's down one side then run the power and remote on the other side? Did you scrape the paint off in the truck where you grounded your amps? Also use a washer to hold the wire down better. Hope this helps.
