Total Suck!!!

So i was driving from my college to my sisters college to pick her up and go home. The trip is a total of four hours. Two to my sisters and two back home. 15 minutes away from my sisters school my car just dies. I find out my timing belt broke and bent the valves. The estimate for repairs is 2,000 to 2,200.What do you guys think i should do. Swap? or what? Its a 93 si by the way.

Re: Total Suck!!!

it all depends how much you can do yourself. i did everything but the valve job and getting the head decked and spent less than it would of cost for a new engine.

it all depends what you can do

Re: Total Suck!!!

Just buy a h22 long block and find a usdm p13 ecu (no speed cut) that would be your best bet man.

Re: Total Suck!!!

if you could do the work yourself, you could DEF save yourself at least a grand by doing the work yourself, EVEN if you bought the most expensive engine you could find (ok not really, but you can find a USDM H22 for around $800)

perfect. if you can do it yourself, save the money and take the time to do it right. if your not in a position to do it yourself. Swap. you can easily get an H22 in good condition on your doorstep for that price. maybe even an F22b (). I just say if your in a position to where you HAVE to spend a lot of money on motor work, make sure you spend it in the right places. good luck, hope that helps.

Re: Total Suck!!!

I am going thru the same problem myself right now. How do you know for sure the valves are bent? I am trying to replace the timing belt on my 95 h23a1 to check it. I thought your chances were better with the manual tensioner of not bending the valves at all.

Re: Total Suck!!!

take it to a machine shop.

just because H23's have manual tensioners doesn't mean the valves won't bend when the t-belt skips/snaps. its just the manual ones are more reliable than the auto's. if either tensioner messes up, chances are the valves are donezo.

i've only heard of very very few cases where the valves weren't messed up when a timing belt snapped, and they were mostly outta shear luck.
