I could use a little help :)

So first off, hi everyone :) I just got my first prelude (a 92 S) and so far I love it :)

I am interested in getting a bit more horsepower and MPG out of the prelude. I have added a K&N filter and wanted to know what I could do for around $1000. I am mainly looking for things that are not to terribly difficult to do (no engine swapping). Thanks for any help in advance.

Sorry if this is poorly posted... don't flame me please!

Welcome..

Get a NOS kit and still have some left over for when it blows up.

cat back is wear i would start. A CAI would help a lil but not to much over stock same thing with a header.

Well first off maintenance is a virtue such as tune-ups,coolant flushes and so forth.
Then do the basic bolt ons such as I/H/E.
Maybe if if you have money left over, than a nice shot of nawzz will give you a bit more pep.

Re: I could use a little help :)

except NOS on stock internals probably isn't the best idea... especially on a 92 with (im guessing here) at least 100,000 miles

Re: I could use a little help :)

ecu and a tune is about the best idea for under a grand... did you remove the "airbox resonator" (behind the pass side front fender) when you added the k&n filter (great idea btw)? that resonator is the most restrictive part of your intake/exhaust system... TAKE IT OFF IF YOU HAVEN'T!!!

exhaust is not a bad idea (you could at least get a high flow cat... www.hottexhaust.com), but won't give much gain without the tune... I know the headers that cost under a grand for the h22 don't do a lot, but the dc header did give the h23 about 5hp... don't know about the f22a1... new cam needs a tune and possibly valvetrain work to be worthwhile... I don't think a turbo would come that cheap, and you would still need to spring for the tune...

so my advice would be (for your price range) a general tuneup (just make sure everything is ready to run as good as it can), add an exhaust or any other small mod you can afford while leaving around $600 reserved to get a new ecu (if you need to with your car??) and get dyno tuned on eCtune, hondata, neptune, or chrome...TUNING THREAD

honestly... motor swaps arent hard at all... if were you just save up.... dont buy to many bolt ons and go w/ h22a. its not a hardswap and the benefits of that motor is that it is AWESOME TO DRIVE w/ an h22. i know the swap could be intemidating but if you do your homework... you might see it is not as hard as you think. lemme know if i can help in any way.

I'd say your next step is to get a header, full cat-back, and a good tune as mr y82 stated.

also not a bad idea... the power gain will be pretty enormous (more than you will get with tune and couple mods on f22a1) and an h22a will mate with your current tranny... may not have quite as much power (taller gears), but it will help with mpgs over an h22a tranny. h22a can be had for $1200 easy, you might find one for $1000... hmotors online is a good place to look.. There is another thread around here on other jdm engine sites...http://www.hmotorsonline.com/shop/sc...age&item=30028 h22a longblock only... (skip the p13 ecu, and get a tuned p28 ... unless the ecu comes without extra cost.)

If you are set on keeping the f22a1 I would do what I mentioned above...

Re: I could use a little help :)

The problem with an engine swap is that I know almost NOTHING about that sort of thing. I am not great with part swaps yet (so far I can change body pieces interior pieces and only the basics in an engine).

Would a turbo be to hard on a stock engine? (damage it?)
what is I/H/E?
also, it is manual. Would a smaller flywheel do alot for a low price?

I really don't know how to find the individual parts I need, so if anyone is willing to kind of coach me, I would appreciate it :)

Thanks for all the responses so far.

Your wrong is so many ways bro

If you dont get on your car every were you go with a cat back and some other mods that help with air flow you mpg will go up. That is why k&n says it will help with mpg and hp. Running premium gas in a car that doesnt need it will lower the mpg (a car with lower compression will not burn the fuel right making you waste it)

Re: I could use a little help :)

Turbo is the way to go with the f22's. I think the compression on those are around 9:1 which is perfect for some boost!!!

Also dyno-tuning your car with a nice tuning program (hondata etc.) will give you more power and IMPROVE gas mileage :)

I do agree with the CAT but my S says preimum unleaded fuel only. But in general if you, race or drive your car hard, want a big noticable gain in hp its going to cost you gas.

Ok so it looks like the best things to add are a turbo and where do I get a tuning/dyno program? any place I can get these cheap?

will a turbo put alot of stress on a stock engine?

Re: I could use a little help :)

Not alot of stress, but more then needed, lol. You can't run high p.s.i for sure BUT - luckily for you, if your going for mpg as well, the car will be tuned for that and not high hp. upgrading some of your internals wouldn't be a bad idea, just to play it safe, but after the turbo kit, tune and re programming your looking at way over $1000, your probably even looking at more then $3000, and then throwing in the internals puts it even higher.

I would say that if you only got $1000 - no turbo, stick to tune and basic i/h/e like what was said before

Its every thing he wants in 1 shot. Vtec- 200 hp or 220hp gas milage is great for the power. Cost just over 1 grand if you find the motor for that much.

"Look kid you can do any thing if magic made it"
I say go for a learning experiance and do a swap.
I know some people think Vtec is over rated and dose nothing but i let a friend who drives a mustang takd litttle miss h22 for a ride and his exact words were "I didnt realize that vtec auctally is like V-TECCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC"

Re: I could use a little help :)

No need for a tranny, your tranny has longer gears, you can do 60 mph coming out of second gear and into 3rd at 7200 rpms, from 5500 rpms to 7800 its the best feeling of life. But i know some people in here know great sites to buy motors from. (i think E , si speed, knows a good place) I dont personally. 92 didnt have the vtec siolnoid hook up on the wiring harness but it can be wired up. IDK how much shops charge to do swaps but i am sure that every one in here will guide you and even come to help you if your close enough on doing what you want to do.

Re: I could use a little help :)

Dose the f22 have the same gearing as the accord?
If not then that might be a good place to go, you will only have to swap out the 5th gear, putting your engine at a lower rpm on the highway. Yet it will not reduce your overall horse power. Also adapt a smart driving style will also help improve MPG more than any thing else. Here is a guide by Jeremy Clarkson (wow that is a oxymoron).
