Icon6 Timing belt gave up the ghost !!

I have a 95 lude with a h23a1, My wife said "Hun, I was going around 40mph and the car died, it was like I turned the key off. No noise from the engine at all" I removed the vaule cover and the belt was in place and looked fine, until I pulled it and it wasn't fine at all, it was broke. My question for you whom I call Prelude gods is this. Is their a test I can do to find out if I have a lude I can fix with a new belt, or a cute large paper weight? I don't want to go thur the trouble to replace the belt if the vaules are toast. Also something else I wanted to ask about is that this car has an auto tranny that seemed to change gears great, but the rpms seemed to be way to high to me. Aroung 4500 at 55 to 60mph. Was that normal?

Re: Timing belt gave up the ghost !!

well the bad news is that the valves are probly toast.... i know from experience. as far as the tranny im not sure about the auto. but im at 4k doin 80mph in my manual.

now depending on how mechanically inclined you are it can be fixed for less than a new engine

Re: Timing belt gave up the ghost !!

I got lucky when the timing belt on my h23a1 broke... started slipping a bit and then came off as I slowed coming to a stop sign, car just cut off...

the h23a1 has a manual tensioner and you get lucky more often than with the h22a/1/4 auto tensioner.

So I guess the only way to check it is to replace the belt and go from there. Thanks for the input guys.

Re: Timing belt gave up the ghost !!

and about the rpms... my h23a1 tranny (m2s4?? can't remember the number) ran 60mph @ 3000K pretty much on the dot... my new m2b4 (jdm h22a LSD) runs 63mph @ 3000K... shorter ratios through 3rd, higher 4th and 5th.
