Hey guys is there anyone here that has experience doing ball joints on a
4th gen lude ? I want to know how difficult they are to do on this car. I think my drivers side has just died on me because all i hear when im driving down a bumpy road, or moving my wheel from side to side is eeer eee err eee err eee errr ee. You get what im saying. Its the most anoying and imbarrassing thing when driving the car so someone give me some good advice on changing them !!

Re: ball joint question

hello, I saw it done on my car and it looks easy, but what i really want to say is,you should check your rubber booths around all ball joints and drives regularly, its cheaper if you catch them in time,as they wont fill up with dirt, and wont loose that much grease.this is what destroys these joints.so best of luck with that, and while your at it.check every booth.jonnybuts

Re: ball joint question

If you jack up the car, wiggle the wheel from side to side. If there is alot of movement you messed something up.

Also - that noise could be your bearings, not ball joints. If you smoked your bearings like I did you get a NASTY squealing sound, and it is dangerous to be driving like that. I would highly suggest finding out if it's your bearings before you do anything else

You left some thing out man.

To check for ball joint movement grab the tire in the 12 o'clock and 6 spots and move your hands in and out (if its bad you can see the upper ball joint move but the lower one is a a bit harder to see) for tie rod ends do the same but in the 9 and 3o'clock spots you can tell if there is movement trust me I do this for a job.

Now wheel bearing can be tricky as hell man. For ex my car is making wheel bearing noise but there is no bearing slop at all. But the best way to check for it is the grab the wheel/tire in the 11 and 5o'clock spots and move in and out. If no movement but there is still noise I would take it to a shop and have it looked at man.

Now to replace a ball joint after you get the a-arm off the car its a bit tricky but it can be done bro. there is a c-clip that retains the ball joint but after taking that off it won't just slip out. You have to take a socket that is about the same size as the ball joint and set it with the bolt end into the socket. Next is the fun part (because at this time you'll be sick off looking at this thing and want to hit it) take a bfh (aka big f**king hammer) and give the a-arm a good wack and it should just come out, oh and make sure you don't smack the ball joint but the area around it man.

I hope that helps man.

Re: ball joint question

alright guys thanks for the replies i brought the car in today to get it looked at. The guy i know at the shop took a quick look and listened under the car while i moved the wheel. He said that it was the lower ball joint what i suspected. Weird thing is all the rubber lookes to be intact but i guess it finally just gave up.

so im going to either go ahead and do the job myself or pay the 160 bucks for labour and have it done. Ill let you guys know if i run into problems and if i need any more help !

thanks !

Jon

Re: ball joint question

go get the parts your self man most shops times all part by two (i should know I do it all day long were I work) if you have an O'rileys around were you live see if you can get there employee discount (aka bitch enough till you get it) and the lower ball joint shouldn't cost more the 60 bucks. then take it to the shop were it shouldn't be more the than a half hour labor time to put it in (if there saying more then that there ripping you off I should know that lol)

Re: ball joint question

the 160 bucks is only for the labour, not even including the balljoint. So it will be well over 200 bucks to replace one ball joint. The guy said it would take minimum 2 hours to do the job. I think i should be able to manage doing it my self. The thing i was worried about was not having a special tool to press the ball joint into position.

Re: ball joint question

technically $80 an hour is cheap for a shop considering the prices of sh!t these days. I have heard that $80 is right around average for a shop, but I still say a lower ball joint would be do able on your own.

Re: ball joint question

Yea, that's cool.

Question for ya, I can't remember off the top of my head, but when you do ball joints for our cars, is it the lower or upper ball joint in which you are supposed to use a "special tool" - or a piece of wood, lol - when you jack it up to take pressure off to replace it. I am thinking it's the upper ball joint, but I can't think straight right now...lol
