Anybody elses speedometer ever randomly go crazy??

This has happened once since i've owned the car. and again just a few days ago...

All of a sudden the D light starts flashing on me, and the speedometer just starts jumping around. like its being shocked with electricity.

Take the car off and restart it, no poblems.

anyone else experience this?

also fyi, I just replaced my Main Relay with a brand new one to correct a starting problem I had (which worked)

someone told me to check the VSS but I dont even know how to check it without simply replacing it.

Anyone have any ideas?

Re: Anybody elses speedometer ever randomly go crazy??

first and foremost, just check the connector on the top of the VSS, just to make sure it has a good connection.

Re: Anybody elses speedometer ever randomly go crazy??

last time i checked flashing d light with a check engine light was a tranny problem. My 2001 honda accord had a flashing d light and check engine light ended up reuilding a tranny. That car was a lemon

Re: Anybody elses speedometer ever randomly go crazy??

yea the D should be a tranny issue but the tranny shifts and runs fine.

either way i wont be rebuilding any trannys beacuse i am eventually gonna go 5spd.

Re: Anybody elses speedometer ever randomly go crazy??

I put too much into mine now to make it worth it.

$600 alarm, put some Xenons into it, Spent a bunch of money doing some maintenance and the 90k mile dealer service. $200 just the other day to have the entire AC system BG cleaned out, Spent a buncha money putting the stereo in it, tinting the windows, plus my car only has 93k original miles and I know it was pampered.

I feel like buying another lude would be inheriting problems. All I really want is an H22 w/5spd swap so the only reason I'm looking at this car is beacuse I figured it maybe a good donor car for the parts I need/motor...

I could easily put my H23 and auto back into it and sell it for probably what I paid for it I'd think, or at least pretty close to it.

Re: Anybody elses speedometer ever randomly go crazy??

the only reason i dont think theyre different is beacuse in this acution it doesn't even list auto or manual as what this one is used for in particular.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-H...mZ330264135739

this is a generic brand not honda OEM anyone have any experience with it? Worth getting?

Re: Anybody elses speedometer ever randomly go crazy??

throttle position sensor

and also - if your VSS is going fritzy you will also notice that your odometer will not work and you will have no cruise control (this happened to me - VSS went out bc of bad connection and all three of those things went out *speedo, odometer and cruise control*)

Re: Anybody elses speedometer ever randomly go crazy??

yea whenever it freaks out the cruise control stops working too.

so i guess its worth replacing this sensor just to see if it fixes it, even if it doesn't it sounds like its a common enough problem where it would happen soon enough anyway so it couldn't hurt to replace it.

It happens so few and far between i can't really "test" it.

But I will go through the shop manual and see what it says in terms of testing.

Can anyone confirm if the VSS is different for auto vs 5spd trannys? and also if that e-bay link i posted should work or not for my 92 si auto. ?

Re: Anybody elses speedometer ever randomly go crazy??

just test your connection. Take the VSS off and put it back on, wiggle it a lil and see if it's loose. If it's loose, try and pinch it together to get more contact - otherwise it's not gonna be very fun to replace, lol
