smoke coming from exhaust..

i got a lot of smoke coming from the exhaust while im driving and I have no f-in clue what it is. any ideas on where to start looking? Only other problems it has is the jumping tach which is irrelavant, and at idle every 30seconds or so she shudders or shakes for a second then goes back to normal. o and it has a small leak under the car and the valve cover seems to be leaking but im guessing its just a gasket

it's a 94 prelude, h23, 200k, 5spd, bone stock

any help in the right direction is appreciated

well if smoke is black it is oil, which i probalby more likely to be leaking if your car is older. but ya check around oil gasket, hoses, and connections make sure everything is nice and tight. also one other thing you can do is set a piece of carddboard under your car and start your car and let it run a little bit wit it there (if it only drops when running) otherwise just leave it there overnight and when you wake up just find center of spill and then it will help you loads.

Or burning rich or lean. but i don't kno much about fuel/air ratio

burning oil is not black first of all. black smoke means you are running hella rich. blue smoke is oil. white smoke is coolant. figure out the color and go from there. oil has a few ways to get into the combustion chamber. around the spark plug, valve seals, piston rings... coolant, you can pretty much guarantee its the head gasket.

its a blue smoke that comes out so that means its oil right?
so replacing the head gasket will fix it or is there more?

blue smoke means your piston rings are wearing out and the motor is burning oil.

h23's with that many miles will burn oil. Trust me.
replacing the headgasket wont cure that. Only a rebuild or a new motor will..

Re: smoke coming from exhaust..

so i have a 93 prelude si and it has a very light blue or white smoke coming out of the exhaust i cant really tell which one it is, but either way as i drive the car for a while the engine will get extremely hot and u can feel it burn through the hood. after it sits for about 5 minutes you can check the oil and it will have more fluid than it started with but if it sits for another 30 its back to full. but doesnt leak. does anyone know what that could be?

Re: smoke coming from exhaust..

yea, my prelude does the same exact thing, it, after 30 seconds shakes or quivers, then goes back to normal

Re: smoke coming from exhaust..

deffinately sounds like worn rings and possibly valve seals also... just keep oil in it don't let it run low or that will only make the problem worse and save up for either a rebuild or a swap

Head gasket had it happen to my caviler before, if it over heats make sure the head gets leveled out due to warping

Re: smoke coming from exhaust..

smoke from an exaust when the car is warmed up usally means its burning oil.in this case the seals around the pistons are worn.1 seal, small smoke 4seals,smoke screen or there abouts try selling your lude to someone you dont know and then buy another 1 or else get it fixed which will cost you a lot.sorry to hear that and i hope that im wrong but thats what it usally is. ive had past expieriances with civics which were screwed and not looked after.jonnybuts
