Icon9 93 h22a cooling problem? v.weird

Hi all, i did a search and have come up with nothing.
had a cel light, so i took it to honda dealer, they put it on the diagnostics and it brought up a temp sensor, then tested it, said it only showed 5 volts. they said it wasn't plugged all the way in, so they reconnected everything and it showed 12 volts again. no cel light.

i picked it up 5 mins later it kicked a cel again. ive noticed the temp gauge never goes up to where it use to, (almost 1/2 way) it maybe moves 4 lines past cold. a week prior to these problems i had driven an hour one way and back and was in neutral talking to my parents, the temp shot up past 1/2 and kept going so i drove and it went back down and hasn't been right since.

so im thinking maybe the thermostat is stuck open? wont let block heat up. had it changed. the operating temp almost goes to where it should, but if it drops down at all it kicks a cel. so im assuming the reason its kicking a cel is because its not getting to operating temp?

any suggestion before i ship it to Hybrid Dynamics in latrobe? sorry so long
thx

yea sorry, we're not TOOOO technical here, but we try. ima retard when it comes to diagnosing electrical problems, and i'm having overheating issues as well when its hot as balls.

are your fans working?
when it starts overheating and you turn the heater on full blast, does the gauge go down at all?

im with nick in this one, im kinda retarded when it comes to electonic aslo... there are like 4 temp sensors, one for the radiator fans, one for the guage, another one that is for the computer so it knows when to idle down when it gets warm. and i think another one after the thermostat

how is your idle when it is cold... and then when it warms up

replaced ect and temp sensor, that fixed the cel light, but my temp gauge is screwed now i think, u turn it on it seems to automatically go almost half way up.
i think im gonna buy an autometer water temp gauge i have a pod with an air/fuel ratio that isn't even hooked up.

can i hook the temp gauge up to the stock temp sending unit sensor?

maybe the wiring is bad now...did you replace the temp guage sensor. that one just has one plug on the end.

but no you cant hook a temp guage up to the stock spot cuz the the the sizes are different but ill snap a pic of how i hooked mine up. well you might be able too but i didnt want to lose the gauge

def sounds like the fans aren't kicking on. i mean if it doesn't overheat on the highway, but it does when your sitting still and no air is passing thru the radiator and engine, its not getting sufficient cooling.

i forget which connector it is, but when you jump one of the temp sensor connectors w/ a paper clip, the rad fans SHOULD turn on. give that a shot. i think its the one on the thermostat housing.

nah ****s really messed up, read closer, when I first start the car in the morning it goes up to almost 1/2 the temp gauge right away. and thats after i changed all the sensors. on the way to work while driving it went almost 3/4 up. now is that considered normal temp since its all ****ed up now? lol

sounds like you have multiple problems, like a busted rad fan, and some electrical gremlins inside your gauges. i'd check the wires for your temp gauge, make sure they're all in good condition.

or the control module, right next to the ECU.

i can't remember right now, is there a relay specifically for the rad fan? could be that.

you can buy a external fan thermostat for the parts store so you dont have to switch it on and off. you just set the temp you want it to kick on.

I'm good at diagnostics lol

From reading this thread a few things come to mind:
thermostat
headgasket

if the fans arent coming on then it might be the thermostat not doing it's job and coolant is not being circulated through the block which would cause overheating.

The reason I think headgasket is because you said you put the car in nuetral and the temp gauge soured up really high.

But I'm still not 100% sure what it could be. it could be electrical but with temperature it more than likely isn't.

here is what I want you to do. Start the car up after it's been sitting for about 6 hours or so. let it it worm up and watch the temp gauge. after about 10-15 minutes squeeze the lower radiator hose and see if it's hot or if it cool. If it's cold then the coolant is not being circulated. If it warm (or getting) then its not your thermostat.

Now if all that checks out and it's still getting hot at idle then the only other thing I can think of is the headgasket. But let's hope that's not what it is.

it actually ended up being the ect sensor and temp sensor, the fal fan was hooked up to a switch that was hidden, that i didn't know about, but it was not hooked up to the + terminal. I think cause it keeps shorting out 30a fuses. also the temp gauge was bad. so i added a autometer gauge and the temp floats around 190 now.

that's great news. I hate when people jump the fans. Do you know if there is even a thermostat in there or not?
