4th gen knock sensor???

anyone know what this does, and what will happen if not plugged in? i had a friend do a head gasket and t-belt and stuff and he told me to plug the knock sensor in and i forgot too, the car still ran ok, but i noticed that it seemed to be burning more fuel then it should have and a bit of power loss.

no one answered any questions about the knock sensor being unplugged, i told you i did not know if it was even unplugged, and i found out today that it was unplugged, so i plugged it back in, and i started the car and the check engine never came on again.I thought i'd have to erase the codes i was getting? 23 and 43
