A starting point please? Ball Joints & Tie-rods

I've got a third gen (89) 2Si, that we've owned since it's birth. She now has 190,000 miles on her.

While having some new front tires put on, the tire shop (to rename un-named, but one I won't go back to) recommended I get new front upper/lower ball joints and both front inner tie rods replaced.

my questions:

1) anybody know how to confirm (or disprove) this and determine if this is a safety issue? I think I had the ball joints replaced about 40K ago.....

2) anybody done this themselves?

3) any good resources that might help with this? I'm alraedy downloading the pdf service manuals....

Thanks in Advance!

to find out if your tie rods are worn jack up your car grab the tire and shake it, if there is play in the tie rod, then its worn. i dont know about the ball joints. check the intervals at which the manufacturer says to replace them

They should be fine if you replaced them 40k ago.
While the tire is off the ground grab the wheel at 3 and 9 and jiggle the tire. Look under the car and see if the whole rack is moving or not. If there is excessive play i would suggest a repair. Check for excessive play a 12 and 6. If it fails at highway speed the wheel will turn in any direction it wishes causing loss of control. Also to tell if they are bad they will squeak when turned. Because of lack of grease. also check if the boot around it is not torn or riped.
