Pulling my b20a5

OK i need to change the head gasket, timing belt and figure out a water leak off the back of my motor so im thinking of pulling it to do the wrk than dropping it back into the car!! My question is it easier to do this (i have an engine hoist and a engine stand and all the proper tools) or to just do the work while it is in the car? If pulling the motor is the better option wat is an approximate time with two fairly experienced mechanics doing this? Also are there any guides on the net that i can print to make the process go smoother!!
Thanks
Troy

No need to pull the motor out to change a headgasket & t-belt.
You probably have a heater hose, or two that is leaking(rear of the motor)that you should replace.

Download the online manual if you haven't already(in my sig).

Ok i was just looking at the engine compartment thinking i cant get all that crap out of here with it all together but hey anything is possible right? And the way the coolant leak problem was described to me was a metal line running behind the motor was crack and tried to be sealed with J.B. weld (damn redneck) and it didnt fix the problem! Does this sound like something that can be repaired? I have never dealt with imports before only domestics and mostly v8s so i kinda clueless!!!!

The thing about Hondas is that you can work on the motor with the motor still in the car...of course, not saying if you have to do block work, but head work the motor can stay.

Metal line? I can name just a few coolant leaks, like coolant bypass valve near the distributor, the two heater hoses(which probably have never been changed since day 1) and the upper/lower hoses that go to the radiator...

If you've blown your headgasket, then coolant can seep virtually anywhere around the motor...

Is the coolant bypass valve below the distributor where you can't really reach it? And all the hoses will be replaced when i pull everything apart cause i hate leaks!!

You can reach it, just remove the distributor and mark the disc with whiteout to mark the original position when the engine last shut off...

you definately dont have to pull the motor out to do this, acutaull if you're pulling the head off then you'll have pretty easy access to all of the water lines that you need to replace, just take the drivers side motor mount out and the cruise control mod to give yourself a little more room, unbolt the power steering pump and the other little holders for the PS line so you can pull it out of the way without disconnecting it, take off the altenator, then unbolt the header and pull it off, but the thing that blows about these motors is that you have to pull the cams off to get to the head bolts, so take the valve cover off and most of the time you can slide the timing belt off of the cam gears, take off the distributer, and the front cam sensor, take out all of the bolts on the cam retainers, pull those off (this can be a bit of a PITA) take the cams off then pull your rocker arms out, take out the head bolts and then you have to get under the car and take the 2 bolts out that attach the intake mani to the IM supporter, then pull away all of your vacume lines and throttle cable then pull off the wireing that thats ontop of the injectors, (those clips can be a pain in the ass too) you dont have to pull the injectors out or take the fuel rail off and you can then remove the head and the IM together, then with the head off you can replace all of those little coolent lines and then the steel water pipe that runs along the back of the motor is right there so you can check it for cracks! now pull the drivers side tire off and get an impact and pull the crank pully off then remove the t-belt covers, take the timing belt off, now you can change your tensioner and your water pump, replace the head gasket with the new one and reassemble everything in pretty much the same order when you get the cams bolted back down, set the motor at TDC and align the cams for TDC position, and put on your new t-belt and put back on all of the covers and finish putting everything else back together from there!!

remember though that there are certain tightening and loosening sequences for the head and the cams and make sure you have a tq wrench and you tq them to the proper specs which i think for the head bolts is 48 ft lbs and i can't remember the tq for the cam holders off the top of my head, but the manual comes in handy for this!!

can you tell i've done this more than a few times yet? but by myself i can pull the head compleatly off the car in an hour and a half, if you and your partner commit a compleate day and a case of beer to doing this you should be able to get it done, depending on what kind of snags you may hit! Don't rush anything though it's better to take your time and make sure it's done right so you dont have to do it again!!

Thanks for the input!!! I was hoping to leave the head assembled but hey whatever it takes!!! I got the service manual from Prelude13 which has alot of helpful info in it!! I think i should be able to get it done in a day!! I can pull the front clip[ off my truck pull the motor and transmission as a unit and reseal everything and have it put back together and running in about 8 hours by myself so think i can handle this!!! Bu then again murphy's law and me dont get along all that well!!! Oh well we will see!!!

you can leave the IM and the head connected but the cams are going to have to come out to be able to get to the head bolts and if you dont take the lifters out then they will fall out by themselves

Well i pulled the head off the motor today!! IT took me 3 hours to do it by myself only needing help once but that was only to lift it up and out!!! I have pics but i need to download them still once i do ill post a link to my photobucket so you guys can see the carnage the was my head gasket!!! But at least that is all the was wrong!!! And i figured out the water leak was coming from the "water pump inlet tube" it had been brazed once then jb welded and was still leaking so im gonna cut out that section of pipe and replace it with rubber to allow some flex in the pipe to hopefully keep it from breaking again!!!
