Hello Everyone,



I have written a few threads this summer asking for assistance with my 1991 Honda Prelude Si 2.1. This summer I decided to finally fix the car right because it wasn't running well. Short story I took it to my buddy at Mlady Nissan in NW burbs Chicago and we inspected the car together. He did a full timing belt replacement on this vehicle even though it was done at 150,000 miles (185,000 currently) it seems the other mechanic didn't do everything correctly.

After that was done he let me do some work in the shop after hours and I replaced the spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, and rotor. The water pump wasn't changed since their didn't seem to be anything wrong with. What I noticed that wasn't a good sign that day was my spark plugs were surrounded with a white coating around all of them. Thus it was running hot even though it wasn't overheating.

When I left the dealership that night the car overheated. Never did that before. After filling it up it was ok. Thru the months of June/July the car would from time to time start to overheat thus not reaching the "H" but a couple of times and I pulled over. Thru the process I had the heat on full blast blowing out since it was summer and I had the windows always down and sunroof open it didn't bother me.

Well to my amazement two weeks ago my buddy and me replacement the radiator hoses and the other hoses associated with the reservoir (yes I cleaned it out as well).

What we found shocking was the radiator I bought thru "1-800 radiator" that had a life time warranty had metal chips flowing thru the system. One of those big ass chips got the thermostat stuck.

The radiator, thermostat were replaced and the car ran like a beast. It seemed like new life was placed into it. Unfortunately 7 days later on 8/14/18 it overheated again, but this time antifreeze was being forced out from the reservoir of the antifreeze. I guess it would be safe to say my head gasket is blown.........

Does anyone know if their are videos or step by step instructions to do this. I am going to attempt to do as much as I can do and then tow it to the dealership so my buddy can assist me. I still got to pay him but he is telling me $450 - $500 is a good deal is it? I have to supply the parts ...

Best bet is to find or download a factory shop (Helm) manual -- that'll have the most detailed, illustrated instructions available. There are lots of places advertising free manual downloads, but make sure that what you're getting looks something like this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1991-HONDA-...-/352312478844. The Haynes manual is acceptable, but not as well illustrated or detailed as the factory book. Anything else is wastepaper. Frankly, it's worth it even to buy a copy -- $46.50 from the original publisher, Helm, Inc -- because it's the best documentation you'll ever have for the car.

Unfortunately, my reference copy is the 1990 version, which doesn't have any of the B21-unique specs.

Are you sure about that? The 1990 manual (US version) should cover the b20a3, b20a5, and b21a1 engines since they were all available that year.

I'VE PROBABLY replaced and removed the b20 and 21 heads about 10 times. THERE are a few tricks that help.This time replace the water pump since you gotta take the timing belt off again.

To add to what Les said, you might also want to consider replacing the cam seals and front crank seal as well as the timing belt tensioner while you're in there. It would suck to have to pull the timing belt again if any of those seals starts to leak. If the tensioner fails the belt will also fail. Then you'll have more serious problems.

I'm pretty sure the UK didn't get the b21. Seems like I read somewhere that only N. American and JDM markets had that as an engine option. Which would explain why your 1990 FSM doesn't cover the b21.
