New Car

I just got a 1991 prelude si, the previous owner had swapped a b20A and a 88 transmission into it, and he'd done a lot of work to it, the only problem is the Speedometer doesnt work, everything else does work on he dash, and i believe he had swapped in a 88 speedo, any advice to get the speedo working again?

Re: New Car

I thought the 90-91 was electronic and the
88-89 was cable driven. There's a vehicle speed sensor that is electric on the 90-91 and they're different cause of manual and automatic. But the 88-89 had a cable. wish he had a 90 -91 transmission then you'd have no problems. I'M PRETTY SURE ABOUT THIS BUT NOT 100%.

Re: New Car

Yeah Les, you're mostly correct. All 3rd gens have electric speedometers. the difference is where the VSS is located. The 88/89 models use a speedometer cable which runs from the transmission to the VSS which is located in the gauge cluster. The 90/91 models do not use a cable, and instead the VSS is mounted directly to the transmission. The module that is mounted to the 88/89 transmission is sometimes referred to as a VSS, but it's simply the connection point for the speedo cable. The gauge clusters are not easily swapped between 88/89 and 90/91, so it's unlikely that this was done. But the 90/91 VSS can be modified to fit onto the module on a 88/89 transmission. This is something that I've only read about in forums though, so you should search in this forum as well as over on preludepower.com for threads on how people have done this. Your biggest problem could be finding a functional VSS for a 90/91.

Re: New Car

I think he Frankensteined the wiring somehow, the speedo has cut on a few times now and worked for like 5-10 minutes at a time

Re: New Car

Somewhere in this forum there's a thread which describes how to disassemble and clean the vss. You might try to find it if you have some time. I did that with my spare vss a couple of years ago, but I don't remember exactly what was involved. I do remember that it wasn't too difficult.
