89 flywheel on 91 b21a

Can I use a 89 flywheel on a 91 prelude with a 91 clutch set? I read the opposite about a 91 on a 89 so I'm confused. Please help. My mechanic says I need one asap or he has to move on to other jobs. I found a 89 flywheel at a local salvage and I can go pick it up monday.

Re: 89 flywheel on 91 b21a

That combination will not work. You can use any 3rd gen flywheel on any 3rd gen engine. It will bolt up fine. Where you get into trouble is trying to use an 88/89 flywheel with a d2a4 clutch kit (90/91). You need to use a flywheel that matches the clutch kit for whichever transmission you are using. Long story short...if you have a 90/91 transmission you need a 90/91 flywheel and clutch kit.

Ok. Thanks. I had flywheel resurfaced and the guy said he cut .044" off. He also mentioned I might need a shim. If so, .025 or .050" shim?

I would think that you'd want to go with a shim that matches the amount of material which was machined off (.044"). Too bad he didn't remove .05" if the only shims available are .025" and .05". I'd probably go with the .05" shim, but I'd speak with the machinist first and see what his recommendation is.
