car sputtered then died..next morning it cranked

i was driving and my 91 lude started sputtering and died. i let it sit for 5 minutes. i started it again and it ran normal for about a mile then sputterd and died again. this time it would turn over but would not crank. i waited an hour and it still would not start but would turn over. The next day it started right up but i think if i drive it will i will get stranded again. i have been having problems with the ignition switch. sometimes i crank it and it would not start and i would have to turn the key slightly backwards for the contacts to catch. When this happens there are no lights on the dash so i know to tilt the key backwards a litle. When it stalled on me, the lights on the dash were on so i would assume the contacts in the ignition switch were aligned correctly. What else could it be. a mechanic says distributor could be the problem. Can a faulty ignition switch cause this?

I see that you posted this question over on preludepower as well. I responded to your post there. Here was what I posted...

First off, if you know there is a problem with the ignition switch then change that out before you do anything else. I have seen some strange symptoms caused by a bad ignition switch. It's possible that you could have more than one problem here, so you need to eliminate known problems before proceeding in your troubleshooting.

If you still have problems with the car starting after replacing the ignition switch, then the next thing I would try is the main relay fix, because some of the symptoms you are describing would indicate a possible main relay problem.

Summertime is hell on those Main relays.Solder point cracks open and then you have no fuel pump.
