Icon5 Changed Oil, Still looks Dirty?

Hello Everyone,

I have a 1991 Honda Prelude 2.1 Si ALB that just hit 165.5K and I have noticed in the last 10K or so that every time I change my oil and check it the oil looks black/dirty unlike it looking like on my other vehicles light caramel color as I like to call it, just wondering if that is normal?

Re: Changed Oil, Still looks Dirty?

First of all, oil color alone isn't an indication of a problem. More important is did the oil get thicker? Also keep in mind that different oil manufacturers use their own additive packages. Some of these can cause the oil to darken rather quickly. Have you recently changed the type of oil you are using, or are you still using the same that you were using before you noticed this change?

Re: Changed Oil, Still looks Dirty?

When I bought my 89 a couple years back, the owners had changed the oil right before putting it up for sale. It looked nice and clean so I drove it without changing it.

BIG MISTAKE...

Once I got it cranked and drove it, the new oil started breaking down and picking up the sludge on the bottom of the oil pan and caused a valve to stick open and ruined the head and one of the pistons. I drained the oil, which was pitch black only after driving a few miles and pulled the oil pan to swap the damaged piston and there was 1.5 inches of sludge in the bottom of the pan. I literally scraped it out with a putty knife and washed the pan with gasoline to get it all out.

That being said, I would suggest that you pull the oil pan and clean it out. I bet there is sludge in there and that's what is causing the oil to be blacker than expected. Clean the pickup assembly as well. There's several chambers in there that will be holding the sludge.

I hope this helps.
