Icon14 B20b/z Swap

Group Buy Thread open - http://www.preludepower.com/forums/s...d.php?t=441538

Update: First start up video -

So due to some issues beyond my control, I had to move on and spend even more money to finish the B-Series kit.
I have found someone who cares about this community as much as I do for aftermarket and performance for our beloved chassis.
I decided to make a new thread since I was moving away from the old vendor due to his personal issues that has cause me massive problems.
So here is what I have been doing in the background with my new partner in crime.

This thread will document my personal build to get the project lude up and running and show the fruits of my work to finish what I start.

And also because we all love a good build.

Project B20b swap

5-20-2016:
The B20b - I and my parnter(to be named later) chose to go with this motor for this build because we wanted to keep our discplacement and torque.
We all know that the B16, B18 motors are pretty torqueless platforms to begin with and as a community we prefer not to lose what we are already used too.
Not to mention that this motor from http://www.jdmenginedepot.com/jdm_en...-jdm-b20b-b20z -
was priced just right for an affordable OE replacement for aftermarket support and OE support as well.
$586 shipped from New Jersey to WA state.

Delivery Day - 5-20-2016

We picked up and S80 transmission which is the none vtec integra B-Series transmission.

Side by side comparison between its older bastard brother...

As you can see the swap is going to get fairly good ground clearance for those who want to stay the low life while being in the same neighborhood as its older brother.

The motor was dropped in with no mounts on just sitting in the bay to get a sense of what we are looking at.

Not bad...

Since I already figured out most of the dimensions from the first B16/18/20 swap kit we have a good idea of what to do.
We however are going to try to reduce the amount cost for us and you guys as well to get the most affordable and efficient kit on the market.

After doing much research on the swap, and since the K series is the most dominant conversation for all the civic/integra/newer prelude guys, this leaves us to be able to affordge and enjoy a plethora of aftermarket support for this swap.

We will be getting the B20b running first then after we get it all running right, then we will be doing the B20vtec conversion.

To be continued....

Re: B20b/z Swap

Update for: 5-23-2016

Well we ran into a snag....

We have to get another chassis. Damage was found under the fenders more than we saw before pulling the fenders.
Its too badly damaged to the point of the chassis buckled and to even use this chassis is going to make the mounts be off by as much as 1" between the shock towers and other places.
Not to mention one of the LCA is torn undereath which makes trying to drive this car unsafe.

So we are on the hunt for another shell, but we have a line on one now.

We did not just want this to be a test fit chassis we wanted a fully operational and running B20b swap.

Other than that, engine placement we got is going to be very good.
Here is what the ground clearance is going to be like...

By the way this car is lowered.

Re: B20b/z Swap

Update for: 5-30-2016

Some updates.

We aquired another 88 chassis with no chassis damage. So we are moving forward.

**Note: The first pics with the radius rod clearances are with the Red lude that was lowered on Neuspeed 2.25" lowering springs. So the transmission and oil pan clearances are how it will sit with lowered springs.

This was the B20b head clearance.

Transmission Radius rod clearance.

Driver side radius Rod clearance.

For comparison, we did a B20a5 vs B20b engine clearance picture to show what the difference is for ground clearance.
I think you will all be pretty happy for those who want as much ground clearance to keep your lowered looks.

**Note: This is the new chassis at stock height.
B20a5/B21a1 Stock height.

B20b/z engine height.

This picture is to tickle those looking to do the B20vtec conversion...:eek2:
The GSR head on the B20b block.

Hood hood closed with GSR Head/B20b block.

So stay tuned for more updates....

Re: B20b/z Swap

Updates for: 6-06-2016

So we have some update pics.

We are having to redesign the Rear T bracket due to some spacing issues.
We had to move the engine around in the bay to get the best possible axle angles and clearances on all sides.

While this motor and tranny will be a nicer fit, because it still taller than the B20/21 motor, we have to keep tweaking to get it right.

This is the process for getting mount mounts done right, and not half assing and throwing out a product just to please some few like some other people...Ahem....lol

Now the pictures you see above are with all three mounts and brackets.

I think we got the placement right, but as with all projects that may change.

Enjoy....:)

Edit:

Hmmmm.....

What to you think guys....

The beginnings of AWD???

Hehehe....

Possibilities....

Re: B20b/z Swap

Update pics:

We have settled on final engine placement for the mounts.

And we have as much clearance that is necessary to do the alternator belt while moving the engine as far back as possible which leads into the axles below.

Axles in place, I think we have finished this part of the project with OE axles.

Intermediate shaft clearance:

Lower control arm clearance for transmission fluid replacement and flush.

And now we have an adapter plate for the Rod shifter linkage hook up.

Harness

Ok so we shipped the OE harness to WireWorx for the custom B-Series harness that will be pretty much plug and play.

We used my new H/F series swap harness as the template to see the differences.

We definitely found quite a few. But no fear WireWorx is on the job.

Here is what my harness looked like mocked up.

So we are pretty close to getting to the start up on the project lude to actually road test the car as soon as we get the prototype harness back.

Throttle Cable
We discovered that the throttle cable holder will need an adapter, and we are working on one. This is a prototype, it could change but we will offer this as well as an option.

Header

The Cheap Header for the integra B series motors are fairly cheap for an 4-2-1 setup.
Remember this will be the cheapest and easiest setup.
If you decide you want one of those 4-1 Race header setups, you will need a traction bar setup from me to make that happen.

Ground Clearance for the header.

Uh Oh!!!! :omg:
We have a slight issue.

Ok well two issues...

The O2 bung section will need to be cut and then you can purchase a flexpipe section for $22 on amazon and have that section cut off and moved back to clear the O2 sensor and then weld the flexpipe into position and the same time you will want to either get an OE style flange for the catback or you can go with the V-Band flange for ease of connecting and disconnecting and better seal.
The option will be yours when the time comes.

So this header has a bracket placement issue. Now this is a cheap knock off so this may not be an issue for the OE header for this setup, remember we are using a GSR head on a B20b block so that vtec head may be pushing the header further forward than the OE head for this block.
But we did want to show you the differences.

We will be testing the B20b stock head before this is done to make sure.

But regardless, all swaps will need some modificaiton to make work and once you get that in place your golden.

Yes it is... so we fix it.

Here are some new updates:

Shift Linkage:
Painted the T bracket and shiflinkage.

PowerSteering:
So we discovered that the P72 Upper and lower brackets are needed to make the powersteering fit.

Motor was pulled and cleaned up and re-assembled with the B20b head to get it ready for actual road testing hopefully in the next two to three weeks.

B20b

More pics after some fixing and finagling...

tweaked the shape of the downpipe and that required a little trimming of the crossmember to make it fit. It will just depend on the header people buy wether this will be required or not:

Shift Linkage:
Had to bend one of the chassis hangars to the side for rod clearance:

Header Clearance:

The stock clutch line works with the teg slave cylinder but the banjo bolt had to be shortened. If people want an off the shelf bolt they would need a M10x1.0 20mm long banjo bolt. The bleeder valve sticking out the back of the cylinder is why I need to tweak the front mount bracket, it touches a little bit:

Final resting position for the entire swap:

88-89 Prelude mechanical VSS solution:

Alternator clearance after full tension:

Powersteering with the stock B20b powersteering pump and head brackets.
No issues.
This is not to be confused with the GSR head powersteering pump and bracket set up which uses a different bracket called the P-72.

To do the power steering feed hose I used the CRV hose and stock hose and coupled them to make a big loop that curves under the pump:

We are waiting on the engine harness, before we can do the startup.
So we are in the final phase of the swap.
