Re: Tranny options

There isn't much you can do about that with the stock powertrain unless you sell your manual and buy an automatic. I've read that automatics have higher final drive ratios, at least in the 88/89 models, but I've never owned an auto 3rd gen so I have no first hand knowledge of that. There have been rumors floating around for years that you can swap in an Accord 5th gear (no one is specific on year or even which transmission). But I haven't ever seen an example where anyone really did this. Larger diameter tires is an easy way to give your car a taller final drive ratio, but it will affect your speedometer and looks goofy. What's wrong with jets? That's part of the appeal of a 3rd gen.

Mike there is a thread on pp with pics about the Accord final drive upgrade.
Let check, be right back....

Edit: Ok back here is the link: http://www.preludepower.com/forums/s...ord+final+gear

It was done for better gas mileage, but will do what the OP is trying to achieve.

I had an auto with 60's. Not much difference. At 65 it was still taching about 2800. Interstate speed of 70 about 3200-3500 depending on the grade I was travelling.

I saw that thread when he first posted it, but he hadn't done any work at that time. Looks like he came back 2 years later and added to it. Thanks for correcting what I said Sean.

At 65 my 91 5 speed shows just over 3300 rpm's. A 500 rpm difference is significant.
