Throw in the towel or keep project going?

This prelude I bought needs a tremendous amount of work! Idk whether to give up and find another(parts car or keep going. The motor seems to be solid but I guess I'm just overwhelmed w all the stuff it needs especially bc I'm not a mechanic by trade. You guys be the judge.. Am I just wasting my time??

Here's a list of the problems that I see at least..
-coolant leak at drain plug(won't fit snug leaks very slowly
-oil pan gasket (small drip from pan)
-passenger window motor
-Antenna broke off in trunk.
-gas tank door won't shut, push/spring piece is missing
-power steering issue...leaking from the return line under vehicle but p/s belt spins so I'm guessing motor works?
-hood hinges need to be welded.
-heat knob broke off.
-speedometer doesn't work.
-iavc bouncy idl
-fender replaced
-unibody seems in good shape minus rust around wheel wells.

All in all despite all the problems... She runs great just so overwhelming w all the stuff she will need.

I have all the records and tons of work has been done and documented on the car over its life. I've replaced alternator and belt and battery thus far.

Opinions?

Re: Throw in the towel or keep project going?

I would use this as a parts car myself. I've voiced my opinion on this car in another thread, but I'll say it again. You didn't even mention the biggest problem with that car in your first post...the rust. It's not just in the rear quarter panels either because I can see there is also some in the rocker panel. If the body is that bad, you're going to have some in more structural areas. I hate to give up on any 3rd gen. Most of the problems you mentioned that the car has could be fixed in a day once you source the parts you need. And those parts can be found in most junkyards, ebay, part-outs, car-part.com, etc. The rust is the most serious problem that car has.

I agree on part out. The cars been abused to the point of having to rebuild the entire thing.

A point A to B car only. I f the engines good , Then you might want to use it for gas mileage. Some cars are designed to run forever but aren't so pretty.Drive it till it dies. Ego will make most sell it or part it out. Depends on what you want.

Ego? no. Vanity? Sure. But mainly it's about safety. How many uni-body cars have you looked at with that kind of rust issue on the body, that doesn't also have rot underneath affecting structural integrity? I have seen only a couple in the 12 years I've been dealing with 3rd gens.

If what he's looking for is a daily beater and the undercarriage checks out, then by all means fix the small issues mentioned and drive the thing. Something tells me that's not what 2ndgenrex is looking for, but I could be wrong about that. Only he can answer that question.

First thing I'd get is the rear window.

Re: Throw in the towel or keep project going?

Yeah. Since the pic I have had the rear window replaced and I replaced the alternator/belt, p/s return line, radiator plug w oring and passenger window motor. I'm jus gonna cruise it until my buddy gets around to looking at the unibody integrity. My original plan was to restore it but me not being mechanically inclined and w limited garage space I am considering just going south for a nicer one. Thanks for the feedback!! It's hard for me to come to terms w it BC i had such high hopes in the beginning. If I do go that route and it becomes a parts car members here will get first crack at it. Gonna try to have it up on a lift this wknd so I'll keep everyone posted.

Re: Throw in the towel or keep project going?

Parts car for sure .....**** I junked a 5th gen SH that wasnt nearly as bad as that thing rust wise but it was bad enough to not fix....

Body work is sooooo expensive , you dont want to know how much I spent getting rust removed from my 93 Lude ....far more than car will ever be worth...ck out my build thread if you want to see what I mean.

Re: Throw in the towel or keep project going?

Rrrrrrrrrrrruusst. The first picture concerns me a lot. Hard to tell from the pic, but it looks like that's where the rocker panel meets the floor pan on the passenger side. It's bordering on being structural, and could affect the integrity of the chassis in an accident. It will only get worse as it deteriorates further. Uni-body cars don't have frames, so the floor pan and rocker panels are an integral part of the support structure of the car.

As far as the other pics, I see lots of what I would consider nothing much more than surface rust. Nothing too significant. But pictures can only tell so much. We'd have to see this in person in order to make a more accurate determination. Drive it as a beater as-is, or find another 3rd gen in better shape and use this for parts. As I've mentioned already, I'd park this ride and find one in better condition. If you decide to drive it for a while, I'd do something about that rocker panel before it gets worse and affects safety.

Drive it until it dies and be on the look out for a broke motor good chassis lude. Do not waste anymore money into that chassis.
