May have screwed myself..un-registerable 4ws

I live in NY and had a 4ws shipped from Ohio instead of picking it up due to my busy schedule. Car comes here but blank title. No leins but he never filled out the seller part and it asks for a notary on both the seller/buyer end of title(unlike NY there is no such notary needed to register). Guy won't return my call/emails and growing frustrated w this. Anyone have any feedback? Worse case scenario ID have to use this poor 4ws for parts. Least I didn't spend much...$400.

Re: May have screwed myself..un-registerable 4ws

I don't know NY laws, but if this happened to me I'd be going down to the County Auditor to see what options I have. I would never buy a car that way, and I suspect you've learned your lesson the hard way. Hopefully the car was legitimately his to sell, and wasn't stolen or something.

Re: May have screwed myself..un-registerable 4ws

I check the vin # and it's clean. The vehicle/name and address on title matches as well so I would have to say it's legit and not stolen. Unfortunately, if this guy doesn't respond back I'm stuck w this 4ws w no title.

Re: May have screwed myself..un-registerable 4ws

Which is why I would talk with someone who knows your state's laws regarding this. In my state, you can file for an abandoned vehicle title after it's sat on your property for a certain amount of time. I don't know exactly how long that is but I've been told it's anywhere from 3 months to a year. You should probably talk to someone in your state who knows if NY has a law like this.

Re: May have screwed myself..un-registerable 4ws

I will thanks. Hopefully this guy just calls back but it's been almost two weeks so isn't looking promising. On the brighter side it's a complete rusty/but runs 4ws.

Re: May have screwed myself..un-registerable 4ws

If it's rusted out you might be better off just pulling the 4ws parts, along with any other parts worth keeping, and finding a better 3rd gen to swap the 4ws system onto. Rust repair sucks. I chased rust on another 3rd gen I used to own. It only had rust around the rear wheel arches. But I was stubborn and kept trying everything I could to stop it except for cutting out and replacing metal. Nothing worked for more than 6 months. The rust always came back. I didn't have a welder at the time so I didn't have the option of fixing it right myself.

Re: May have screwed myself..un-registerable 4ws

Yeah for the price I couldn't pass it up. I have a good frien who says he's gonna help me w the rust. The frame is solid and i got it dirt cheap. He does body work for a living. 4ws are rare here in the North East. We have 3 year old vehicles w rust on them here in Buffalo, NY. I live right on lake Erie in a salt belt.

Re: May have screwed myself..un-registerable 4ws

These cars don't have a frame. They have a unibody construction.

Have you had the car up in the air enough to thoroughly inspect the underside? If the body is rusted it's likely that things underneath the car are just as bad or worse. I don't want to discourage you from bringing this car back to life, but be sure and inspect everything for rust. Common areas are the front crossmember (especially where the radius rods are connected), rocker panels, and rear sub-frame. But honestly, rust can appear anywhere, so take a good look under there.

Oh, and we love pictures. So feel free to add them to this thread.

Re: May have screwed myself..un-registerable 4ws

Just got it registered. Lady at dmv either didn't care or notary is just need needed? Either way didn't ask. Car is registered!! I haven't been through the inside and undercarriage completely but I will take a futher look before I put any more work into it. From what I can see the rockers/strut towers/underneath trunk is solid. ..I'll try and get some pics soon

Re: May have screwed myself..un-registerable 4ws

I've registered and obtained titles for 3 vehicles that didn't have them. It's called a BONDED TITLE. You go to the local car insurance place where you have a policy and ask them to do it for you. They charge 100 bucks for this. Then after a month or two you'll get the title in your name mailed to you as long as it's a clean car. It's done somewhere in Nebraska I think. Look into that first before deciding to part it out if You're serious about keeping it.Ooops, I think mit gets mailed to the insurance agent.

I just registered it. Lady at the DMV didn't question it so I didn't.

Re: May have screwed myself..un-registerable 4ws

Wow, that's one rough 3rd gen. You definitely have your work cut out for you. Does it run? It's missing the 4ws badges on the b-pillars. Did you verify that it really is a 4ws model? The driver side fender looks bad, but its the easiest thing to fix on that car.

Re: May have screwed myself..un-registerable 4ws

It is a matching vin# Si 4ws.
. The only 4ws badge left is on the steering wheel emblem. Surprisingly, it runs great thus far...gonna cruise it for a few months to see how the motor runs. All ive done to it is put a new battery/alternator/new rear window and all new belts. Drives nice just a little loud from a hole in exhaust. The interior is black and pretty good shape!! Just could use a good cleaning.

Problems: hood hinges need to be welded. Driver fender. Rust obv. Exhaust. Tires. Power steering leak etc etc. List goes on an on but she runs good. I'll make a decision of trying to save her or not after a few months of cruising/feel for the motor.

Re: May have screwed myself..un-registerable 4ws

Nothing wrong with just driving it and enjoying the 4ws.

Keep an eye on the fluids. Any idea on how long it's been since the timing belt was replaced? With this being an interference engine, I'd recommend replacing the timing belt if you don't know the service history.

I've got a few 4ws emblems if you really want them.
