Re: installing vss

Welcome to the forum. Just so you know, there is a difference of where the VSS is located between 88/89 and 90/91 models. Which do you have?

Re: installing vss

On 88/89 models the "vss" that is installed in the transmission is actually just the gear mechanism for the speedometer cable (mechanical part). The actual vss is attached to the gauge cluster (electrical part).

On 90/91 models the vss that is installed in the transmission is the actual vss. The 90/91 speedometers are not cable driven.

Why do you think you need to replace the vss? Are you getting a trouble code for that (17)? Or are you replacing it because your speedometer doesn't work?

Re: installing vss

You have no speedometer? You mean it's physically missing, or do you meant that it doesn't work? If it's missing, is the entire gauge cluster missing as well? Please try to be more specific with your information if you would like us to be able to help you.

All I have to go by is what you say, and you said you have no speedometer. I was just trying to clarify. You would think it's obvious that if you're asking for help with a speedometer issue, you would have a speedometer in your car. But I can tell you that's not always the case. I've seen people ask for help with a system on their car when they are actually missing half the parts in the system. We have no way of knowing your technical abilities, so we have to err on the side of caution. You have given very little information up to date, and most of that I had to ask you for. Please try to keep in mind that you're the one who came to the forum asking for help. We are happy to help. But copping an attitude isn a good way to make people not want to help.

One thing I didn't ask is does the odometer still work? If the odometer works then the cable is working, along with the mechanical speed sensor mounted to the transmission. If the odometer doesn't work then you have an issue with one of those two components.

I posted to the other thread that you posted in, and included a link to the online service manual. That link only shows you the component location. If you determine that the cable is working correctly, click on the link below for the procedure to test the speed sensor mounted to the gauge cluster. Unfortunately I don't have a direct link to the page for this, but from this link, click on Electrical, then click on Speedometer under Gauges.

Not only was this a very valid question from Luzer, but I also suspect you have purchased the wrong part to repair your car.

If it looks like the one in this post, it is correct for an 88-89, but it is not a VSS. It is a VSS cable drive and will likely not do anything for your problem.

If it looks like this, it is the correct VSS for your car, but still not a common failure for this issue.

If it looks like this, it is for a 90-91 and will not fit your car.
Transmission Output Vehicle Speed Sensor Fits Honda Accord 90 91 Prelude 93 92 | eBay

You probably either need this piece or the other shorter section of cable

The final option would be a wiring issue.

To answer where it is on the motor, its not. Its not on the transmission, not even under the hood as Luzer has said. However the cable drive is located in the back top of the transmission on top of the differential. It is under the shift cables. On top of your engine between the valve cover and intake plenum you will see a cable with a nut in the middle, this is your speedometer cable. Follow this cable down and you will find the speedometer cable drive assembly. To access the assembly you will need to remove your intake tube from the throttle body, shift cables, and shift cable bracket. On the back side of the Speedometer cable drive assembly under the intake manifold there is a special bolt with a 10mm head, this retains the cable drive into the transmission. On the firewall side of the cable drive you will see two hoses, these are for your variable assist power steering and will need to be removed so don't forget to top off your power steering fluid with Honda type fluid. The short section of the speedometer cable (from that nut connection to the cable drive) is held into the cable drive assembly via a small hair pin clip under the rubber boot on the dive assembly. Unfortunately, none of this will solve your problem.
