Its smoking, help

no anti freeze in it, and at the bottom of the dipstick where it should be, there is only dark stuff, kinda gunky. but not alot of it. and there is some sort of oil/liquid around part of the top portion of the engine(around it). it has sprayed over the top of the valve cover and such, causing smoke. I didnt check the antifreeze when i bought it damn it. but help would be great from you guys, thanks.

Yes, do what sfields says, clean out the radiator first, then fill it up.
Then do a fresh oil change and see what happens...

Could be a heater hose, or two...

is it coolant that is splashed all over the engine bay or what?

My dad claims hes "about 90% sure" its coolant, but were no mechanics really, but he thought it was some sort of hose or line as well.

Like I said, it could be your heater hoses(located near the firewall - a pain to locate) or could be the small coolant bypass hose that is near the distributor...check in the morning when there is light out...you'll see it leak out(or spray out) when the car is on and running...

good luck!

Thanks, im looking at it tomorrow morning, then if all else fails its going to the shop..ughhhh

Could it be something serious though?? like a gasket? but if it was a gasket why would it be spraying upwards?

But thanks guys, i love you.....**cricket noise**

it could spray anyway the leak lets it.. if its under pressure it could go anywhere, like when you put your thumb over a garden hose you can move it and it will spray in a bunch of different directions.

i hope its just a hose, not a gasket. But me and my father are going to drain and flush the system tomorrow, and change the oil. so we'll see.

dude!

Since im losing anti freeze, and theres anti freeze spitting out of the top area of the engine, it must be some sort of anti freeze line....?....if so, how much would that run me at the local mechanics shop?

I have a 90 Si with B20A5 (conversion) that I recently overhauled. On the back side of the engine, below the intake manifold, is a tube roughfly an inch in dia. that handles your coolant. It sprouts a bunch of small tubes that connect to (.25 in) hoses. If any of these split or come loose, you will get a LOT of coolant out. (I missed reconnecting one during the o'haul). Getting to some of them is the biggest prob.

Ok so i went to the shop down the street from me, dude says its probably a coolant hose. and he todl me to go 2 towns over to this shop where theres a good honda mechanic and he said it might be a few different hoses and he showed me a hose that was "crunchy", you could even hear it crunch. so he said hes goign to pressure test the system and call me tonight

ooh ****t;;;;sorry i thought i was in the 4th gen forums, dont pay attention to me, i feel like an asshole now ha

if the vss on the 3rd gen is the same as the 4th gen:
coolant lines actually dont run through the speed sensor, sorry....but there is a plastic gear on the speed sensor that could be stripped, or there is just a loose electrical connection, i would try cleaning the plug before replacing the vss....im having the same problem and im fixing it today..
sorry again

....UGHHH, my dad got the call from the mechanic, it needs a radiator. Apparently when they got the new hoses on, they tried connecting them to the radiator and the connections were rusty enough to chip away, so im using most of my check this week to buy a new radiator, so wish me luck within the next week or so as i venture into installing a new radiator, of which ive never done before. so ill make some calls tomorrow and find a new radiator.

how do you think the install should go with pretty much "0" experience with radiators, and regular tools with the car sitting on stilts in my apartment parking lot?

well... I've never replaced a radiator.. but I'm damn sure I could! Make sure you do it while the engine is cool, its under pressure! And check with your apartment complex... a lot of them dont allow work on cars in their parking lots.. and you dont want to be stuck with the radiator half out and have some guy come tell you to pack it up, it might even be a violation of your lease agreement.

I think you could do it, it doesnt seem like too complex of a deal, some hoses, some bolts and fluid.
