car bogs out after first turn over, then starts

Hay guys its been awhile,

I ran into another issue here after a long while. its a weird one i guess. unexplainable shapes in the sky.

jk. but really it's as follows.

When i first go to turn the car on it will bog out terribly. Its hard to tell if it turn over before it bogs out. I'll take the key all the way down and try again. normally, on the second or third attempt, she comes right on, along with the CEL light. but the weird part is, the radio and A/C blower normally don't come on after the car turns over. they are completely unusable, but this is an intermittent issue. When this occurred, I naturally checked all my fuses in the engine and cabin, just to find them intact. In don't know what to think, I don't want this to turn into another or bigger issue :/

Have you checked the code?

Not yet. I was just talking with Tony about that. After I left the coffee shop and turned on the car to check the code, the CEL light did not come on at all, and she turned right over like a good dog. However, the radio and blower would not come on, which confuses me. I'll look to check it next time it throws the light. It seems its on the first startup in the morning, Just got that oil changed and the mechanic said no light came on.

I'm suspecting your ignition switch with those symptoms. I've had to replace two ignition switches over the years, and both times the radio and blower either stopped working or became intermittent. Along with the engine not always wanting to turn over. This may sound funny but how many keys do you you have on your key ring? Too much weight on the key while it's in the ignition can cause issues with the ignition switch.

Re: car bogs out after first turn over, then starts

I just checked and it flashed 6 times. Which if I checked correctly, means a coolant temp issue? Also, funny you should mention my key chain. I'm a minimalist when it comes to that so I really only have 4 keys on there and even that's to many for me. They all hang from a small light carabiner. What do ya think?

Re: car bogs out after first turn over, then starts

It's normal for the ignition switches on 3rd gens to wear out. I don't know that having a bunch of keys on there actually wears it out any faster, but I do know that it can cause a worn out ignition switch to have issues.

I don't have any other keys with my 3rd gen key, in fact that's how I am with all the keys for my other vehicles too. I keep my house and work keys in my pocket. So I guess you can call me a minimalist too LOL.

Re: car bogs out after first turn over, then starts

So I guess my only remaining questions are the following;

Did you get the same CEL code as me when this happened to you?

Was it hard to get the steering wheel off to replace that thjng?

Did you do the troubleshoot steps as per the manual as far as checking the continuity within the 7P relay?

Re: car bogs out after first turn over, then starts

I didn't have any codes stored, but it's very possible that the code 6 is unrelated to the other issue you are seeing.

It was easy to replace. The steering wheel comes off with a single nut, and since it's not a press fit like a lot of domestic steering wheels, it simply lifts off the spline after the nut is removed. But to replace the ignition switch you need to also remove the upper and lower steering column covers and the lower dash cover. All are held on with screws and are easily removed. Keep in mind that the part you would replace if you determine you want to replace the ignition switch is not the key cylinder, but the electrical switch screwed to the back of the key cylinder. See the online manual if you are not sure.

I didn't follow any troubleshooting procedure. I read on the other forum about other people with a similar problem, and the majority of those turned out to be the ignition switch. I normally would troubleshoot a problem like this, but since I had a spare ignition switch it was actually easier to just swap it out and try it.

If it turns out to be the switch you can try taking the cover off the switch and resoldering the connections to get you by if you don't have a spare. Others have successfully done this. Just make sure to relube with dielectric grease after soldering the points.

Re: car bogs out after first turn over, then starts

So interesting enough... the issue stopped occurring with the car bogging out. It's also been a lot warmer so that may have something to do with it. I think your very close if not spot on with the question about the switch being good. I think maybe a combination of humidity and cold cause some parts to get stuck and break. The issue is now the following:
The a/c and power to all things like radio and cigarette lighter only work with the key turned to the first position. After that, the power to those areas is cut. Right now I'm just charging my phone with nothing else running. I hope it won't strain the battery too much. I don't have an ignition switch handy. I wonder if they can still be picked up in stores
