Mechanical 4WS was introduced on the 3d gen Prelude as an option.

Actually, 4ws was not an option, it was a separate model, at least in the US. For instance, you couldn't order it on a carbureted model. In 88 and 89 you could buy a 2.0 S model, a 2.0 Si model, or a 2.0 Si 4ws model (again for USDM). In 90 they changed the engine in the top models to a 2.1 liter and added the Si ALB model to the Prelude line-up, joining the 2.0 S, 2.0 Si, and Si 4ws. In 91 the 2.0 S carb'd model was dropped. Interestingly in the US, you couldn't buy a Prelude with ALB and 4ws. Not sure why that was because *in other markets* you could buy models with both. Also, in other markets you could get a carb'd lude with 4ws, which was the 2.0XX4ws model.

Re: Are 3rd generation preludes 4ws?

To answer the topic question: no
To answer with a but: they were all fun to drive.

Yeah it seems like they had different 'models' of Preludes along the way...all the way to the end of production in 2001.

US cars seemed to have less 'options' than other areas...like cell phones, heated mirrors, digital climate controls, power folding mirrors, leather seats and other nifty possibilities that were not available to the US market.

Under seat storage trays, headlight washers, rear window wipers, rear fog light and other stuff too.

Now we could get a CD player or an equilizer to make that Duran Duran cassette a little more dynamic. I believe the head unit that supports the cd player differs from the 'standard' one though.
