1990 Control Head Problem

So I have a interesting problem with my control head (the A/C and Heater Controls)
Firstly, I noticed after getting a brand new battery that my control head led lights were not on. Then I tried selecting different blowing modes. I'm stuck on front vents with outer air. However, my blower fan speeds work fine and my A/C button still seems to control my radiator fan's at times. Of course, my climate cable works.
Secondly, the A/C is stuck in the off position. Like nothing I have tried has turned it back on. I only have vent air.
Took it to a mechanic and wasted 108 dollars on a stupid diag. Told me my control head was bad and would cost 400 to replace. couldn't get a straight answer from any mechanic I asked why some controls work and some don't then. I am aware of a refrigerant leak I have. That shouldn't have taken my A/C controls away. I have checked all my fuses (all good). I've looked and looked for fixes to no avail. Apparently I'm a unique case...

Re: 1990 Control Head Problem

Get a junkyard climate control unit and replace yours to see if its just the unit itself.

Or take the unit out and take it apart if you know what you are looking for.

A brand new unit would cost $400 but those are not in existance so I dont know why he quoted you a price when he should know better than that.

He probably just brushed you off since he suspects you will not drop the money to get new unit and he really does not know whats wrong with yours.

Re: 1990 Control Head Problem

Well would that fix my problem? I forgot to mention this, but my defroster button by the steering wheel is not working either. Does the control unit act as a hub of all the AC/Heater functions? And could this just be a soldering problem I can fix?

One last thing, how can I remove the control unit?

Re: 1990 Control Head Problem

It will fix your problem if your problem is a bad climate control unit. This is assuming that the used unit you install is itself good. Your specific problem is not one that I have heard of anyone having before...not a common problem. Unfortunately no one here can tell you exactly what you need to do to fix it, but replacing the climate control unit is a good place to start.

Follow the online manual for removal and installation instructions, page 15-18 in the Heater and Air Conditioner section. Here's a link...

Re: 1990 Control Head Problem

Thank you! I'll start by looking for broken circuits and bad solder connections. I'll see if I can locate a working one

It's possible that the seller added the wrong pic and he may have the correct part. Try contacting the seller. But what is pictured is definitely not the right part and will not work in your lude.
